ROHere is a crazy cool carnivorous plant! An aquatic bladderwort, U. olivacea forms thick algae-like mats near the surface of still ponds. Bladderworts use specialized suction traps that capture minute animals. The first time seeing this species, @whenleifgivesyoulemons showed me an amazing spot with lots of bladderworts and sundews! Credit to finding this plant goes to him. The last images are macro shots of individual flowers - tiny!!!

This is probably the cutest one in my carnivorous plant collection. This is also what got me into bladderworts. π
When people ask me for suggestions on what carnivorous plants they should try first, I usually recommend Utricularias than Pinguiculas or others. To me, itβs because these require very minimal care and they are also okay with excessive watering which I find a very common problem with many plant enthusiasts. Idk. Thereβs just something that draws us to water plants more. Lmao π So honestly sometimes, thirsty plants are easier to care for.
My Utricularias bloom whole year round and I find them so fascinating. π€

QEπΏ Utricularia longifolia, a carnivorous plant (more information below) β¬οΈ
β¨ Origin and habitat
This carnivorous plant is endemic to Brazil, where it grows in humid areas on nutrient-poor soils, often in peat bogs, wet rocky outcrops, and forest edges. Like all bladderworts, it has evolved a unique trapping system to compensate for the lack of nutrients in its environment.
πΈ Impressive flowering
β’ The flower stalk can reach 30 to 60 cm tall, sometimes more under ideal conditions.
β’ It usually carries 3 to 10 large purple flowers, each measuring 5 to 7 cm in diameter.
β’ The flowers, reminiscent of orchids in both shape and color, are among the largest in the entire Utricularia genus.
β’ Flowering is often triggered by strong light and a marked difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures.
πͺ° How it traps prey ?
β’ Bladderworts do not have visible carnivorous leaves like Venus flytraps or pitcher plants. Instead, they use tiny bladders (1β5 mm, underground or underwater) that act as vacuum traps.
β’ When microscopic prey (protozoa, rotifers, larvae, micro-crustaceans) touch the sensitive hairs, the trap door opens and the prey is sucked inside in less than a millisecond.
β’ This makes it one of the fastest mechanisms in the entire plant kingdom.
π‘ My personal growing method
β’ Substrate: sphagnum moss mixed with perlite
β’ Water: only reverse osmosis water (or demineralized or rainwater), with a permanent water tray (2-3cm)
β’ Winter (in France): grown in a terrarium, under strong full-spectrum LED lighting.
β’ Spring/summer: once temperatures reach +10Β°C both day and night, I move it outdoors with my Venus flytraps (Dionaea muscipula), in full sun and standing in water.
β’ The outdoor sun exposure + day/night temperature shifts stimulate flowering.
π Why grow it?
Utricularia longifolia is not only rare and stunning but also surprisingly easy to grow.
With the right setup, anyone can succeed with this species.
And when it blooms, itβs a truly gratifying and spectacular show that rewards your patience.

CRChristmas has come for my aquatic Utricularia. What presents did they get? Endless ostracods.
In the video is a sizable portion of a suspended aquatic species, Utricularia inflata, in my Geosesarma vivarium feasting on ostracods under 365 nm UV light. I don't actually know where these came from, or how they got into my tank. I certainly don't maintain them or create cultures. Nevertheless, my Utricularia is happy and being well fed.

MIπ¬π§ Utricularia, commonly and collectively called the bladderworts, is a genus of carnivorous plants They occur in freshwater and wet soil as terrestrial or aquatic species.
All Utricularia are carnivorous and capture small organisms by means of bladder-like traps. Terrestrial species tend to have tiny traps that feed on minute prey such as protozoa and rotifers swimming in water-saturated soil. The traps can range in size from 0.02 to 1.2 cm. Aquatic species possess bladders that are usually larger and can feed on more substantial prey such as water fleas (Daphnia), nematodes and even fish fry, mosquito larvae and young tadpoles.
Despite their small size, the traps are extremely sophisticated. In the active traps of the aquatic species, prey brush against trigger hairs connected to the trapdoor. The bladder, when βsetβ, is under negative pressure in relation to its environment so that when the trapdoor is mechanically triggered, the prey, along with the water surrounding it, is sucked into the bladder. Once the bladder is full of water, the door closes again, the whole process taking only ten to fifteen milliseconds !

Bladderwort does the opposite.
Bladderwort uses tiny underwater suction traps called utricles that actively pull in zooplankton and small invertebrates in milliseconds. Trigger hairs set off a rapid pressure change, water rushes in, and the trap quickly resets to hunt again.
While bladderwort is a carnivorous plant, spiders are safe. Their traps are microscopic and designed for prey much smaller than an eight-legged visitor. Bladderwort primarily captures water fleas, mosquito larvae, rotifers, and other tiny aquatic crustaceans.
Two traps. Very different strategies.

THWhile most bladderworts (utricularia) are either too big to grow indoors or have traps underground, whatβs unique about utricularia gibba is that itβs an aquatic species that can be grown in a container as small as a cup. It is also incredibly adaptable, as you can grow it both inside as a houseplant, in an aquarium, and outside in a bog or water garden. Oh, did I mention it produces yellow flowers that look like miniature orchids?
