If you’re a runner and you’re not doing this, you’re gambling with your progress. Running isn’t just cardio. It’s thousands of single-leg landings. Every step sends force from your foot up through your ankle, knee, and hip. If your tissues can’t handle that load, something eventually gives. These are 6 essentials every serious runner should be doing: 1. Bent-knee calf raises (10–15 reps) Builds soleus capacity, the muscle that absorbs and re-produces force every stride. 2. Straight-leg calf raises (8–12 reps) Builds stronger push-off power and improve energy return with every stride. 3. Tibialis raises (12–20 reps) Strengthens the anterior shin for better foot strike control and reduced shin pain. 4. Peterson step-downs (8–12 reps) Develops eccentric quad strength and patellar tendon tolerance. 5. Single-leg RDL (8–12 reps) Pelvic control and posterior chain strength, key for efficient stride mechanics. 6. Bulgarian split squats (8–12 reps) Unilateral strength so your stride doesn’t fall apart under fatigue. Add these 2–3x per week. Progress them. Get stronger. That’s how you run longer, faster, and with fewer nagging injuries. Follow @williamdurnik for strength work that actually supports your running.

If you’re a runner and you’re not strengthening these, you’re building on a weak foundation. Running isn’t just “fitness.” It’s repeated impact. Every stride loads your ankle with 2–3x your bodyweight, sometimes even more depending on pace and terrain. If your lower leg can’t absorb and control that force, something eventually breaks down. These 3 muscles handle most of it: 1. Soleus Your real endurance muscle. Handles repetitive load and protects the Achilles. 2. Tibialis anterior Controls foot strike. A strong tibialis anterior reduces shin stress and improper landings. 3. Peroneals Stabilise the ankle and prevent excessive rolling and lateral overload. Train them 2–3x per week. Progressively overload them. Strong lower legs = durable running. Remember: The weak link isn’t always where it hurts.
