NOIncandescent Light Bulb
An incandescent light bulb is an electric light with a wire filament heated until it glows. The filament is enclosed in a glass bulb with a vacuum or inert gas to protect the filament from oxidation. Current is supplied to the filament by terminals or wires cast into the glass. Most bulbs are used in a socket which provides mechanical support and electrical connections. These bulbs are manufactured in a wide range of sizes, light output, and voltage ratings, from 1.5 volts to about 300 volts.
Because they are much less efficient than other types of electric lighting, many countries have phased out the use of incandescent light bulbs. They convert less than 5% of the energy they use into visible light, with the remaining energy being lost as heat. Despite this, they are still used in specific applications where their low manufacturing cost, high color rendering index, and instant-on capability are preferred. Newer technologies, such as LEDs and compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), have largely replaced them in general lighting applications due to their superior energy efficiency and longer lifespan.
