I love using a foam roller, but it’s actually pretty rare that I use it in the standard way to roll out tissues. As self-massage or release tools, foam rollers absolutely have their place for the right person at the right time. Hands-on bodywork does too. You do you. That said, I see this a lot: those super “firm” foam rollers are often just too firm. Many of my patients tell me they’re simply painful, and pain is not a requirement for them to be effective. A medium or softer roller often works much better, especially for hypermobile bodies. More often than not, I use foam rollers as a way to provide sensory input for proprioception and as an unstable surface to gently activate stabilizing muscles. This approach tends to help my hypermobile patients and clients feel less tension overall, not more. One thing I really like about movement-based work is how well it works as a pain relief tool. Gentle, active movement supports fascial hydration and tissue glide, and it often helps people maintain the benefits they get from the manual techniques, and even can reduce need for hands on work to let that tension go. Like anything, there are endless modifications and variations. If these don’t feel good for you, don’t force it. Tips for hypermobility 🦓 1. Keep the movement smaller than you think you can control at first 2. Move slowly and pay attention to what you feel in your body 3. Breathe 4. part two ! you may need to hold the screen to read a bit 🎀 remember as always, go slowly and be gentle with your hair. work your hair brush always from bottom to top. some vintage girlies use pomade to help smooth their curls- i have not tried this yet but i intend to! i usually use a bit of a silicon type hair serum, but only a little bit because these products can have a separating effect on curls. i’m not sure why wedding hair stylists are not using curlers more often! they have more body, they last longer and can be done ahead! i would love to see foam rollers come back into style!
