How to use the plate loaded leg press 🦵 - Adjust the seat height to a comfortable position and where your legs are able to reach the foot plate. - Place the required weights on either side of the pins. - Place feet onto foot plate and push up. - Push locking handles out to the side to release. - Lower legs down. Aim for a 90 degree angle or to a comfortable position, making sure heels stay flat on the foot plate, core braced and strong. - Use legs to drive plate away, pull handles towards you and lower foot plate back into resting position. This week we’re covering the Leg Press machine and how good is it to see Trainer TJ stepping in front of the camera to share his expertise! The leg press is an excellent exercise for building strength through the glutes, quads, and hamstrings using a supported, controlled movement. Watch the video to learn the correct setup, technique, and bonus adjustments for glute or quad focussed workouts- then take it onto the gym floor and put it into practice. In my opinion, the pin loaded leg press is the best option for building strong calves. Why? It ticks a lot of boxes: ➡️ Plenty of room for progression The weight goes to 175kg (plus fractional plates). This may seem like a lot but the calves are very strong. In fact, for most people, this will end up being one of the heaviest exercises they do in the gym. Even if you max out the weight, you can switch to single leg. It doesn’t feel as comfortable for me but it does allow you to keep progressing. ➡️ Hip-loaded = better stimulus The leg press is a hip-loaded set up meaning the weight is loaded through your hips not through your spine or hands. Why does this matter? With many spine or hand-loaded calf exercises you will fatigue somewhere else before your calves are properly worked. For example, smith machine/barbell calf raises can be limited by your back. Dumbbell calf raises can be limited by your grip. This doesn’t make them ‘bad’ but it means a hip-loaded set up will be better for maximising load and making your calves the limiting factor. ➡️ Grippy, solid platform for the feet The footplate is grippy and has a solid edge which digs into your shoes. This allows you to pause and fully relax into the stretch at the bottom and focus on working your calves without your feet slipping. ➡️ Simple set-up It’s not a major thing but this machine requires no complicated set up or any effort adding on lots of weight. It’s the simplest an exercise can be. Now, you may be wondering, surely the calf press is the better option? You would think so but the foot plate is very smooth so your feet have a tendency to slip each rep if you fully lower into the stretch. Therefore, you either have to cut the range of motion or adjust your feet each rep, neither of which are great. Also, the weight only goes up 134kg which is less than the leg press. This is fine for many people to begin with, but it does reduce the scope for progression. Any leg press can work for this exercise but some will be better over others. E.g. the plate-loaded leg press in our gym can be loaded heavier but the foot plate is less grippy so the exercise is less comfortable. *cont. in comments*

While the unit offers an incredible calf workout it also benefits the entire ankle structure by strengthening all of the tendons and ligaments. Furthermore, users do not need to perform separate dorsi flexion exercises for the tibia as this machine allows for that movement simultaneously. Athletes love it!

By using the leg press machine, you can safely add load while maintaining stability. 🔥 Why this exercise works: • Targets the gastrocnemius (main calf muscle) • Improves lower leg strength and definition • Enhances ankle stability and balance • Supports performance in walking, running, and jumping 🧍‍♂️ How to perform it: • Sit in the leg press machine with your back supported • Place the balls of your feet on the lower edge of the platform • Keep a slight bend in your knees (do not lock them) • Lower your heels to feel a stretch in your calves • Press through your toes to raise the weight • Pause at the top and squeeze your calves • Lower slowly and repeat 🛡 Keep the movement controlled and avoid bouncing at the bottom. 🏠 No gym? No problem. Here are some simple tips: ✅ Balls of feet on edge - heels hang off slightly. ✅ Lock knees softly - don’t bend or lock out fully. ✅ Push through toes - lift heels as high as possible. ✅ Squeeze calves at top - pause for 1 second. ✅ Lower slow - full stretch before next rep Full video will be live tomorrow.
