Most videographers immediately reach for expensive stabilization gear when they could be maximizing what’s already built into their camera.
This is my go-to checklist I make sure to hit on every time I shoot handheld!
• Camera Settings: Turn on Active Stabilization mode if you’re using a Sony camera (MENU > Camera > Image Stabilization > SteadyShot)
• Lens Selection: Native Sony lenses communicate better with the IBIS system than third-party options. Sony glass gives noticeably smoother results.
• Body Positioning: Keep your elbows tucked tight against your body, creating a human tripod. The camera should feel like an extension of your torso.
• Footwork: Practice the “ninja walk” - rolling from heel to toe while keeping your knees slightly bent to minimize vertical movement.
I’ve used this exact technique on paid client shoots ranging from weddings to corporate work, and clients are consistently amazed at how stable the footage looks without any post-stabilization.
The best part? I can set up and start shooting in seconds rather than spending 10+ minutes balancing a gimbal.

Ever wondered why your footage feels either cinematic or just... off?
It’s not just your camera or color grade - it’s motion blur.
And the secret behind it is your shutter speed.
All give clips in this video are filmed at 24fps, but each one uses a different shutter speed.
Same setup, same movement.
But the feeling? Completely different.
Here’s the breakdown:
1/20 → soft, slight motion blur;
1/50 → matches the 180° rule, feels natural
1/100 → sharper and cleaner, but a bit digital
1/500 → every frame is captured with almost zero motion blur
1/1000 → results in a hyper-realistic, frantic look that can feel “digital”
If you want your footage to feel smooth and cinematic, follow the rule of thumb:
FPS × 2 = ideal shutter speed At 24fps → go for 1/48 or 1/50
But if you want more blur (for style) or ultra-sharp frames (for sport / action) you’re allowed to break the rules.
What matters is knowing the difference and choosing the one that fits your story.
