I drew this Celtic carnyx based on an archaeological find from Deskford, Banffshire, Scotland. The original find was not complete, consisting mainly of the wild boar's head. It was discovered in a peat bog in 1816 and dates back to around 80AD - 200AD, placing its origins in the Iron Age. Experts believe the find, made of sheet bronze and brass, is the head of a carnyx. Carnyces were played in battle by Iron Age Celtic tribes in Western Europe to strike terror into enemies, including Roman invaders, with its haunting cries. It was also used to inspire and direct the tribes' own warriors. It is likely that these instruments were also played and used as part of religious rituals and ceremonies. Excavations by National Museums Scotland in the 1990s examined the spot where the artefact was found, and experts concluded that the carnyx ended its life as a sacrificial offering to some unknown deity – possibly at a time of great danger or celebration. Archaeologists think that there was a widespread belief in the Iron Age that wet locations were sacred places where you could contact the gods. We can imagine the terrifying cacophony of carnyces in warfare through the description given by the Greek historian Polybius. Describing the Battle of Telamon in Europe (225 BC) between the Roman Republic and an alliance of Celtic tribes, he wrote: “There were countless trumpeters and horn blowers and since the whole army was shouting its war cries at the same time there was such a confused sound that the noise seemed to come not only from the trumpeters and the soldiers but also from the countryside which was joining in the echo.” #drawing #celtic #history #wildboar #carnyx

The Pictish people were an ancient Celtic people that lived in Scotland from the 3rd to the 9th centuries AD. They were given the name the “Picti” by the Romans translating to “painted people”, as a reference to their alleged full body tattoos. Unfortunately for us, they weren’t great book-keepers, meaning most of their history was either retold by the Romans or absorbed into later medieval folklore. However they did leave behind some spectacular standing stones, ornate weaponry and beautiful jewellery. I absolutely love learning about this period in history, it brings real historical fact together with myth and Folklore, culminating the tales of the Fearsome, tattooed Pictish warrior clans of the North! #scotland #folklore #history #Pictish #mythology

Ireland’s oldest surviving art. Still shaping our homes today. Over 1,200 years ago, monks in Iona began creating what would become one of the most extraordinary manuscripts in history — The Book of Kells. Every knot. Every spiral. Every curve. Drawn by hand. Crafted slowly. Never meant to be ordinary. Those same sacred forms still hold power today. Ancient — yet timeless. Intricate — yet balanced. Rooted in prayer, patience, and meaning. In Donegal, those motifs live on. Recreated respectfully. Interpreted for contemporary interiors. Designed to bring Irish art back into everyday life. This is not trend. It is heritage, made visible. It is where Irish art comes home. 🍀 Follow us and stay connected to your roots. . . . #BookOfKells #IrishHeritage #CelticDesign #IrishArt #MadeInIreland LuxuryInteriors HeritageHome RugsOfIreland

I drew a Celtic carnyx, imagined as a living creature, something between a wild boar and a dragon. The carnyx was played in battle by iron age Celtic tribes in Western Europe to strike terror into enemies, including Roman invaders, with its haunting cries. It was also used to inspire and direct the tribes' own warriors. The final picture in this reel is a recently discovered carnyx found in West Norfolk, UK - the third carnyx ever to be discovered in Britain, and one of the most complete examples of the instrument yet found. As this carnyx was discovered on the land of her tribe, the Iceni, it may have connections with the great Celtic queen Boudica. Boudica famously, courageously led her armies in revolt against the Romans in Britain. Perhaps this carnyx was even used in her battles. We can imagine the terrifying cacophony of carnyces in warfare through the description given by the Greek historian Polybius. Describing the Battle of Telamon in Europe (225 BC) between the Roman Republic and an alliance of Celtic tribes, he wrote: “There were countless trumpeters and horn blowers and since the whole army was shouting its war cries at the same time there was such a confused sound that the noise seemed to come not only from the trumpeters and the soldiers but also from the countryside which was joining in the echo.” #drawing #celtic #history #wildboar #dragons

A map of Continental Celtic ancestry in Europe shows where Celtic history truly began 🧬🗺️ The original Celts did not come from the British Isles. They emerged in continental Europe, centered around the Hallstatt culture of Central Europe (modern-day Austria, southern Germany, Switzerland, and nearby regions). This is where Celtic language, culture, and identity first formed ⚔️ From Hallstatt — and later La Tène — Celtic groups expanded west into Gaul, north across Central Europe, and eventually into Britain and Ireland, where Celtic culture took on its later island forms. This map helps explain why Celtic ancestry is still found across much of mainland Europe, even in places not usually labeled as Celtic today. The British Isles were an endpoint, not the origin 🌍 👉 Want to know if you have Hallstatt / Continental Celtic ancestry? Click the link in bio
