EIIreland in 1550 was a very different place to the country we know today.
Much of the island was still controlled by Gaelic Irish clans and Old English lordships, each with their own laws, customs, and territories. Life revolved around kinship, farming, cattle, and seasonal rhythms. The Brehon Laws were still widely practised, poets and historians held respected roles in society, and Irish (Gaeilge) was the everyday language for most people.
English rule was largely limited to the Pale around Dublin, but that was beginning to change. The Tudor Crown was starting to push for tighter control, planting the early seeds of the plantations and major social upheaval that would reshape Ireland in the centuries that followed.
