What makes it so wild?
🔥 A violent past
Centaurus A is the result of a galactic merger, where a large elliptical galaxy swallowed a smaller spiral galaxy.
That’s why you see that dark, warped dust lane slicing right through it — the shredded remains of the smaller galaxy.
🕳 A supermassive black hole gone extreme
At its center sits a black hole weighing around 55 million times the mass of the Sun, actively feeding and blasting out relativistic jets that stretch thousands of light-years into space.
These jets shine brightly in radio, X-ray, infrared, and visible light — making Centaurus A one of the brightest radio galaxies in the sky.

At a distance of about 12–13 million light-years, it’s one of the most intensely studied galaxies beyond the Milky Way.
What makes it so wild? 🔥
🌀 A violent past
Centaurus A is the aftermath of a galactic merger, in which a massive elliptical galaxy absorbed a smaller spiral galaxy. The dramatic dark, warped dust lane slicing through its bright core is made of gas and dust left over from that collision—the shredded remains of the spiral galaxy.
🕳 A supermassive black hole gone extreme
At its center lies a black hole with a mass of roughly 50–55 million Suns. It is actively feeding, launching relativistic jets that extend hundreds of thousands to millions of light-years into space when the full radio lobes are included.

These jets and lobes shine across the electromagnetic spectrum—radio, X-ray, infrared, and visible light—making Centaurus A the nearest radio galaxy and one of the brightest radio sources in the sky.
