The most rigorous evidence comes from a controlled feeding trial where pregnant women randomized to 930 mg/day (versus 480 mg/day) during the third trimester had offspring with faster information processing speed at 4-13 months and superior sustained attention at age 7 years.Specifically, the higher-dose group showed better performance on signal detection tasks, with the ability to sustain attention to brief visual signals across a 12-minute session, while the 480 mg/day group showed a 22.9% decline in performance.However, these studies involved small sample sizes (n=13 per group initially, n=20 at follow-up). The adequate intake for pregnancy is 450-480 mg/day, yet approximately 88-93% of pregnant women fail to meet this recommendation, with median intakes around 260-328 mg/day #choline #eggs #pregnancy #baby #doctor

With new legislation announced that will require non-wholemeal wheat flour to be fortified with folic acid from the end of 2026, what benefit does this have for newborn babies? Folate, or folic acid, is an essential vitamin for the formation of a healthy spinal cord and neurons. It’s involved with all the mitochondria in all of the cells so it's really It's really important to take your prenatal vitamins around conception, trying to conceive and for the first trimester.   As well as taking your prenatal supplement there are some foods that are rich in folate and that you can enjoy daily to support you and your baby's health. Broccoli and of course, leafy greens, are high in folate. As are avocados, which also have healthy fats and are high in fibre. Beans are also rich in folate, as well as protein, fibre and flavour. And let's not forget the humble egg! Not necessarily the highest in folate but it contains choline which is another really essential micronutrient for pregnancy and these pack iron, protein and lots of vitamins as well!
