Labeling my reading curriculum! If you use the CKLA reading curriculum you probably already know it’s a beast to organize. Last year was my first year with this curriculum and I was very overwhelmed on how to organize everything. Towards the end of the year I finally felt good about organizing this curriculum. Student readers fit perfect in those @walmart mini crates. Teacher manuals fit great in a 10 drawer cart from michaels. The student workbooks I have hidden in a cabinet until we need to pull them out when we are on that unit. Students will keep the unit workbook in their “briefcase” or desk because those are consumables. Teacher knowledge is KEY 🔑 It’s my first year teaching 3rd grade! I was so excited to see that my curriculum (CKLA) included some morphology (not enough by any means)…. but some nonetheless. However, they fail miserably when it comes to teaching the CORE terms of basic word structure. More specifically they confuse “root words” and “base elements”. Sadly, this is not uncommon. The term “root” has long been ambiguous in its reference and definition. As teachers, it is vital that we make a distinction between the morphological base and the etymological root. 🧩 A base is a strictly structural term. 🧩 A base refers to current English spelling. 🧩 A base holds the core meaning of a word. 🧩 A base can be both free and bound. 🌎 A root is a strictly historical term. 🌎 A root refers to the etymological source of a base. 🌎 A root denotes the historical origin(s) of a word. Use the term base when referring to word structure. Then specify if the base is… 1. a free base (can stand alone as a word by itself) or 2. a bound base (must be attached to at least one additional morpheme to form a complete word) Terminology matters! The English spelling system is precise and the terminology we use when teaching about it should reflect that precision. Did you know the difference between a base and a root…?
