🧠 Depression: Common Myths Explained 🧠 Depression is one of the most common mental health conditions, yet myths often stop people from recognising it or seeking help. Let’s break some of the biggest misconceptions: 1️⃣ “It’s all in your head” ➡️ Not true. Genetics, environment, life events and even substance use can all contribute. 2️⃣ “Antidepressants are the only treatment” ➡️ Medication can help, but psychological therapies (like CBT or talking therapies) are also highly effective. Often it’s a mixture of different treatments. 3️⃣ “It only happens after something sad” ➡️ Reactive depression can occur, but for many people low mood develops without an obvious trigger. 4️⃣ “People can just snap out of it” ➡️ Clinical depression is a medical condition. It’s not about willpower, biological changes in the brain often play a role. 5️⃣ “You’ll be on antidepressants forever” ➡️ Many people are able to gradually stop medication after at least 6 months of treatment, under medical guidance. Starting treatment doesn’t mean you’ll have to stay on them for the rest of your life. 🔎 The reality: Depression is a multifactorial health condition.
