They’ve partnered with 20+ farmers markets in LA county for Angelenos to drop off their food scraps to be composted locally, and then transformed into nutrient-rich compost that helps nourish parks, gardens, and green spaces! 👏 Outside of farmers markets, LA Compost has community compost hubs where volunteers help compost all the food scraps collected. The reality is this: in the US, one-third of our food supply goes uneaten, and food is now the single largest material in our landfills. Each day, countless tons of food are rejected by health inspectors. The easiest option is to landfill this material. We’re offering an #ecofriendly alternative: When businesses choose de-pack + composting, they’re helping to keep food out of landfills, cut methane emissions, and return nutrients back to the soil. Orange County District 5 recently attended an O-Town Compost tour of the Gaston Soil and Mulch composting processing site in Mt. Dora to see firsthand how food waste can be transformed into high-quality compost that supports local farmers, builds healthier soil, and creates jobs. We were joined by partners from Orange County Public Schools and the Orange County Convention Center, both of which send food waste to be processed on site with Charlie from @otowncompost! Right now, only 24 Orange County Public Schools are composting, but the district’s sustainability team plans to convert five schools per year until all 200 schools are participating. The demand for finished compost is high, as Gaston’s plant partners rely on these organic materials to strengthen soil health for farmers who need more nutrient-rich inputs. This is a clear example of how waste diversion can fuel small businesses, expand economic opportunity, and invest in regenerative agriculture. Currently, Orange County sends nonrecyclable materials to the landfill, where they sit and decompose without generating economic value or supporting local enterprise. Composting offers a different path: one that keeps resources in circulation, builds regenerative soil, supports small farmers, and creates jobs at partner facilities. Composting with Biochar also helps sequester carbon and return it to the soil, which strengthens climate resilience and can help mitigate flooding when used in landscaping and land management. There is a future where we build healthier soil, reduce flooding impacts, support local jobs in composting, and treat our organic waste as an asset rather than a liability.
