How to build compost? @lacompost Compost Hub Manager, Maggie Smart-McCabe showed me how community gardens compost heaps are made. ☀️ Over the course of 3 weeks with a group of volunteers—they tend to the different stages of composting. This specific heap was very hot 🥵 that had some unique organism like actinobacteria. Actinobacteria (often called actinomycetes) are beneficial, filamentous bacteria that appear as white, cobweb-like mats in the final, curing stage of hot composting, helping break down tough materials like cellulose and lignin. They thrive in aerobic conditions during the thermophilic (hot) phase, contributing to nutrient cycling and pathoge As decomposers are breaking down everything and adding energy, there are interactions happening. Today’s scraps are tomorrow’s soil! 🌱🪱☀️🦋 @LACompost is taking community composting to the next level. They’ve partnered with 20+ farmers markets in LA county for Angelenos to drop off their food scraps to be composted locally, and then transformed into nutrient-rich compost that helps nourish parks, gardens, and green spaces! 👏 Outside of farmers markets, LA Compost has community compost hubs where volunteers help compost all the food scraps collected. The organization also hosts educational events and will soon launch a MAGIC SOIL BUS - a traveling classroom that will bring compost and soil science education to kids at schools, libraries, and community spaces across LA! 🚌 Check out @la2050 for more incredible organizations and support the changemakers shaping the future of Los Angeles!

COMPOSTING 🪱 Season 2 Episode 03 for my independent web series Teaching Climate Together is now live with @lacompost Last year, I worked together with LA Compost, a large community composting organization providing Angelenos with accessible composting solutions and education 🍎 📕 And in this episode we delve into some of the benefits of composting and why it matters long term to compost. As someone who started composting back in 2022, it was a whole game changer for myself and the way I saw myself to be able to properly compost my food waste! Everyone on the team worked so hard to make this episode happen with a labor of love. 🥰 Please consider watching the full episode on YT (head over to my profile bio). But you can whiz all over it 💦 🦠 Diseased plants with mildew or blight aren’t going to die in your compost pile, they’ll just spread more disease 🍕 Greasy foods like pizza contain a lot of oil which coats your compost material and slows down decomposition 📰 Glossy, shiny paper like junk mail contains toxic inks and microplastics that don’t easily break down Follow for more no-nonsense gardening tips 👍 #compost #composting #tip #tips #food #soil #dirt #garden #gardening #funfacts #funfact #helpful #diy #theshilohfarm

#compost #nodig #gardeninglife

How to compost in Los Angeles! This is one of our most asked questions in our weekly Q&As. Here is a quick run through of composting options in the Los Angeles area! • Drop off at an @lacompost site @lacompost has multiple compost co-ops and drop-off sites throughout LA. At the drop-off site shown (Elysian Valley Community Garden), simply bring your food scraps, weigh them, empty it into their large containers, then upload the weight to their website via QR code. Visit their website for locations, accepted materials, and more info! • Start a worm bin Vermicomposting is a great option for small spaces. Worms eat the food scraps and turn them into compost! You can purchase composting worms online or ask your local buy nothing group—worms multiply quickly and folks often have enough to share! • Start a backyard compost pile If you have the space, you can start your own compost pile in your backyard. You just need space, some greens (food scraps), browns (such as wood chips or dried leaves), and a mix every now and then. Check with your city or local gardening group on composting classes. • Sign up for @compostable.la No time or space to compost on your own? @compostable.la will pick up your food scraps and compost them for you! They drop off an empty container, you fill it with scraps, then they swap it out for an empty one each week! Check their website to see if they serve your neighborhood. Other options: - Visit @sharewaste to see if any of your neighbors accept food scraps for compost - Check with your city’s website if they accept food scraps in your green bin #compost #composting #lacompost #compostablela #wormbin #vermicompost #compostbin #sustainla #losangeles #highlandpark #zerowaste #goingzerowaste #zerowastejourney #ecofriendly #sustainable #zerowasteliving #zerowastecollective

Many people don’t realize that soil, especially healthy soil, is full of life. 🪱 🧑🏽‍🌾 For my recent episode for Teaching Climate Together, we focused on Composting with @lacompost where I got to work with Alyssa Carillo, Education Program Manager at LA Compost. For this segment, we collected two unique soil samples: one from the street side near the garden and the other inside the community garden to examine how microbes differ. She gave me a 101 lesson on life in the soil. Millions of species and billions of organisms make up a complex, diverse mix of microscopic and macroscopic life that represents the planet’s greatest concentration of biomass. Bacteria, algae, microscopic insects, earthworms, beetles, ants, mites, and fungi are among them. Altogether, their value has been estimated at $1.5 trillion annually worldwide (Source: USDA). Estimates vary, but if you could weigh all the organisms in the top six inches of soil on an acre of land, you’d find they would weigh between 2,500 pounds and more than 5,000 pounds, depending on how healthy the soil is. That is a LOT of life. The healthiest soils are those with a diversity and abundance of life. If you want to watch the full episode, head to my profile bio and click the Composting episode.
