THThings to consider when picking punctuation for your book:
Remember the intention of each punctuation mark. A semicolon and an em dash are two very different things
Ask someone else to read sticky spots out loud. This will not only help you hear the words but see how other brains interpret what you wrote.
Try switching things up! If you notice a lot of commas on a page, ask yourself if you can switch a few to a period.
