Deceleration is a huge part of sport. Every cut, stop, or change of direction requires the body to handle a big braking and eccentric demand. After injury, if we’re not intentionally training how an athlete slows down, we’re missing an important part of the sport context. These are a few ways I like to start building that back in. If you want to see how I train the 5 athletic movement patterns of sport with injured athletes, check out the RTS Blueprint in my bio. #sportsrehab #returntosport #sportsphysicaltherapy #deceleration #changeofdirection

✅ Acceleration & Deceleration Starts in the Core. Speed isn’t just legs. Your upper body and core control how force is created, transferred and absorbed. 1️⃣ Acceleration The core transfers force from the legs to the upper body, allowing you to project forward and explode into your first steps. 2️⃣ Deceleration When you brake, the trunk must stabilize and control the force coming from the lower body. Without this control, you lose balance, speed and efficiency. 3️⃣ Upper Body Integration Arms, trunk and hips must work together to create rhythm, momentum and stability during high-speed movement. 🔥 Strong legs make you powerful. A strong core and upper body make that power usable. #movementmatters #acceleration #deceleration #soccer #athlete

Deceleration. In sport, most injuries don’t occur during acceleration. They occur when the athlete has to absorb force. Landing from a rebound. Cutting at full speed. Stopping after a sprint. Deceleration is a neuromuscular skill — not just eccentric strength. If an athlete cannot: • Control joint positioning under high load • Dissipate force through the kinetic chain • Coordinate trunk–hip–knee–ankle sequencing • Tolerate high eccentric rate of force development …then tissue capacity is exceeded. And that’s where overload becomes injury. We often overemphasize concentric output and undertrain braking capacity. But mechanically, deceleration demands: → Higher peak forces → Shorter time to stabilize → Greater motor control precision → Superior tendon load tolerance Train the ability to absorb, not just produce.

Athletes don’t get hurt when everything is perfectly planned — they get hurt when the stimulus is unpredictable. That’s why we use reactive ball catches. They force the eyes, brain, and feet to communicate in real time so the body can organize itself under changing conditions. Sport is chaos, not choreography, and training has to prepare the nervous system to respond, redirect, and stabilize on the fly. #GRITAthleticTraining #ReactiveTraining #InjuryPrevention #NeuroAthletics #AthleticDevelopment #SpeedAsASkill #Deceleration #ChangeOfDirection #FootSpeed #BrainBodyConnection #3DMovement #TrainTheSystem #AthleteHealth #PerformanceTraining

DECELERATION TRAINING . The ability to rapidly decelerate is often an overlooked quality during rehab and sports performance training. . Much emphasis is typically placed on developing concentric strength and power, and rightfully so. However, it’s important to note that nearly all injuries occur when an athlete is in the act of braking, not accelerating. . For this reason it’s vital that emphasis is also placed on improving eccentric rate of force development as well as improving overall neuromuscular control in both the rehab and strength & conditioning settings.

Deceleration and absorption work with @cee2x___ of @dallascowboys Goal here is eccentrically absorb the force of the falling med ball and body weight while creating stability in an unstable environment. This simulates slowing down for double move routes or any hard change of direction. 🔑 Keep the chest up, hips down, knee over toes 👌🏽 @alkemeperformance #TrainWhatTranslates @alkemesportsrx #TheAthletesPrescription #deceleration #cowboys #ceedeelamb #drreef #nfloffseason #balance #workout

Incorporating deceleration exercises throughout your entire rehab journey is crucial for a successful recovery. Start with simple exercises early on, and let these foundational movements guide you through to the advanced stages of your rehab process. 🏃‍♂️💨 Deceleration training helps in controlling speed and reducing the risk of re-injury, especially during activities that involve sudden stops or changes in direction. As highlighted in studies from the Journal of Athletic Training and Sports Medicine, these exercises are key to rebuilding strength and stability, particularly in the late stages of ACL rehabilitation. The goal is to progressively challenge your body to handle increasing loads and speeds while maintaining control and stability.
