Decoding big words can be easy! When students can divide words into syllables, it will make it easier for them to read multisyllabic words automatically. The more practice they have breaking words apart, they will begin to do it automatically as they are reading phrases or passages. #sor #phonics #teachertips #teachergoals #lettersounds #reading #learningtips #multisensorylearning #teachingideas #firstgradeteacher #syllables #syllabication #spelling #scienceofreading #learningwithheart #sor #teacherresources #magicesyllable #esl

Type “Word Work” 💚💜 Decoding & Encoding: Both work on the essential skills of blending and segmenting, which are required when learning how to read and spell! This models how to break a word down based on the vowels. You can also break this word into morphemes once those meaningful units have been taught! 🤩 im + port + ant These mats are great for moving back and forth between these skills. The sentence helps to connect with meaning. You can also write the definition. 🥳 Do your students need this type of practice? #phonics101 #scienceofreading #learningtoread #learningtospell #decode #encode #syllables #bigwords #phonics #phonemicawareness #firstgradeteacher #teachersofinstagram #homeschool #scienceofreadinginstruction #structuredliteracy #wordwork #teachermom

Backward Decoding is my favorite way to review phonological skills and patterns quickly and effectively! It packs a high number of meaningful repetitions into just a few minutes. Students are forced to pay close attention to the individual graphemes in words. ‼️ No guessing. No skipping. Just decoding. Use it as a quick daily review. Five minutes - High impact! Comment “teams” to learn more! NOTHING sucks the joy out of learning to read more than struggling does! #structuredliteracy #phonicsactivities #earlyliteracy #readingteacher #lettersounds

This has been another tried-and-true fan favorite for years. 🙌 When students are learning phonics skills, they need lots of opportunities to decode words—not just once or twice, but again and again with different patterns. That’s exactly why I love this activity. In Fill-a-Word, students look at the word and choose the missing letters or chunks to complete it. It’s simple, but powerful. They have to look carefully at the graphemes, think about the sounds, and apply the phonics pattern they’re learning. There are 70 pages covering a variety of phonics skills including CVC words, blends, digraphs, silent e, vowel teams, r-controlled vowels, and more. If you’re looking for something simple that still gives students meaningful decoding practice and adds a little something different, this one has stood the test of time. Comment “decode” for the link. #scienceofreading #structuredliteracy

It’s important that we teach kids to sound out words instead of memorizing and/or guessing words. However, if a child is consistently stuck sounding out every single word, then continuous blending can really help with this! # #scienceofreading #scienceofreadingteachers #structuredliteracy #literacymatters dyslexia

Decoding helps kids read words faster and in much easier way and they don’t need to memorize at all. ‘ai’ and ‘ay’ both make long a sound but ‘ai’ always comes in the middle of a word as no English word ends with i whereas ay always comes at the end of the word. 💚Let’s decode a multisyllabic word! 💚Watch to see how easy it is to break apart a multisyllabic word with a magic e! 💚 The students realize the importance of breaking words into syllables…decoding each part one at a time…then reading the entire multisyllabic word! I have seen the same student that would SKIP a multisyllabic word at the beginning of the year, successfully DECODE a 4- syllable word with ease and confidence. 💚After consistent practice with post-its or on our “syllaboards”, the students begin doing it automatically when they read! 👏 💚Check out my bio for a free download and more info! 👆🏼 #scienceofreading #decodingwords #readingtips #readingtools #syllablication
