I am SO excited for this series! 🧠✨ Before I get into anything - feel free to comment any indigenous cultures that you’d be interested in learning more about their views on psychology so I can grow a nice list of knowledge systems to explore! Having been and continuing to be a student of psychology, it’s no secret to me that it doesn’t have the brightest past. There are several moments where ethics was compromised, where psychology was weaponized against marginalized groups and used to justify genocide and colonialism. It’s also no secret, like with many other systems we call “science,” that the Eurocentric perspective dominated popular opinion and knowledge.🌍 The goal of this series? To really decentralize western psychology and create more space for a global perspective. To honor practices that were unique and sometimes opposing to traditional approaches - pushing back towards a medicalized and commercialized approach to the human mind and exploring cultures that embodied this as a way of life.🌿 Disclaimer: I may sound a bit harsh in my judgment towards early theorists that shaped western psychology, however I do want to clarify that I have deep appreciation for these researchers and their bravery in exploring topics that were out of societal norms at the time. There is a system in place that is meant to keep you small and unhappy. A system that is meant to keep you working 50 hours a week in order to make you feel so tired, so preoccupied that you don't think about anything else apart from your own little world. And that system starts when we put our children in school, into an institution that teaches them to become so called 'good' people. But not good people in the sense that they grow up to care about others or wish to lift up those who have less than them, no, 'good' in the sense that you become 'successful' (whatever that might mean), to have a job and buy materialistic things, like a house and a car. So that we become the fastest running hamster in the wheel. And after 50 years of working we step out of this wheel with broken limbs and a broken brain. The news that you are being fed are not meant to inform you they are meant to brainwash you, to keep you scared of everything that's different to you, of people who live in a different culture, people who have different coloured skin to you, people who follow a different religion. Because people who live together with love, respect, and understanding are useless to the system. They would not be able to do what they are doing now, bombing and starving innocent mothers and children if they had not managed to make you believe that these people are less worthy of living than you are purely because they look different and they live differently to you. If you find yourself hating on people of colour and Muslims, you are the perfect little hamster. More in the reel, this caption is too long.
