Hi everyone 👋 As you know, I’m deeply passionate about creating spaces where Occupational Therapists can reconnect with their knowledge, skills, and professional identity as OTs, particularly for those working in, or drawn towards, mental health. Many OTs I speak to carry a quiet uncertainty about their place in this work. They wonder whether sessions that are largely “talking” sit outside their scope, or whether they need to retrain to do the mental health work they feel pulled towards. Imposter syndrome becomes louder and louder. My first training of 2026, Sitting With What Hurts, is designed to hold that uncertainty with you. It explores grief, shame, and anxiety as occupational experiences, and reflects on how disrupted routines, shifting roles, and changes in meaning sit firmly within OT practice. This isn’t about becoming a counsellor or changing your professional identity. It’s about recognising the depth and legitimacy of what you already bring as an Occupational Therapist. Practical details: • Sitting With What Hurts: Grief, Shame and Anxiety as Occupational Experiences • Live training: 20th February, 9–12pm (GMT) • 3-hour reflective session • All live trainings are recorded, with 90 days access to the recording after the session You can view the training information here (the rest of the site is still slightly under construction): 👉 https://luminasprings.com/services/ All bookings are open and running smoothly via Payhip: 👉 https://payhip.com/LuminaOT To support early booking and accessibility, a limited number of voucher codes are still available for the 3-hour live trainings: • HELLOTHERE50 — 50% off for the first 20 bookings • COMEONIN26 — 26% off for the first 30 bookings #occupationaltherapist #occupationaltherapycpd #occupationaltherapy #mentalhealthoccupationaltherapy #mhot #mentalhealthoccupationaltherapist

❗To the therapists and students grinding through a never-ending workload: Read that again. 📖 In a field where we are often measured by “billable units,” “minutes,” and “outcome measures,” it is so easy to start viewing our own value through a lens of efficiency. When we burnout 🔥 trying to meet the sometimes impossible productivity standards, we aren’t just hurting ourselves—we’re impacting the quality of care we provide. Advocacy starts with how we treat our own time and mental health. Take a deep breath. You are enough, even on days the documentation doesn’t get finished. @ot__anderson 📢 For those students stressed about tests: Code: “brotbrain” for 15% off 90 days or more NBCOT study products and other speciality allied health exams. In occupational therapy, the framework of self-care, productivity, and leisure forms the foundation for promoting client independence, well-being, and life balance. Self-care is prioritized to ensure the "cup is full" for daily functioning, while productivity covers work/school, and leisure restores mental energy. OTs use these areas to design client-centered, purposeful interventions.  Self-Care on Top Self-care in OT refers to activities that maintain one's physical and mental health. It is considered a skill that must be developed and is essential for maintaining the energy required for other occupations.  Fundamental Activities: Dressing, bathing, grooming, and hygiene. Mental & Emotional Self-Care: Setting boundaries, taking sensory breaks (e.g., quiet, dim light), and engaging in positive self-talk. Physical Maintenance: Regular exercise,, such as yoga, walking, or stretching, to regulate emotions and mood. Recharging: Activities that "pour back into your cup," such as resting, eating well, and engaging in hobbies.  Productivity Productivity includes tasks that contribute to a sense of purpose, accomplishment, and daily functioning.  Employment & Education: Managing work responsibilities or schoolwork. Home Management: Cleaning, cooking, and chores. Volunteering: Engaging in community-based, unpaid work.  Leisure Leisure encompasses activities that enhance quality of life and provide relaxation, which is crucial for reducing stress.  Interests & Hobbies: Gardening, painting, playing sports, or listening to music. Rejuvenation: Watching television, streaming services, or socializing. Integration: Utilizing hobbies in therapy to make recovery more engaging and enjoyable.  OT Approach to Balance Occupational therapists help clients balance these areas to avoid burnout and improve quality of life.  Interventions: Techniques include task adaptation, environmental modification, and skill training. Goal Setting: Creating personalized goals that revolve around what is meaningful to the individual. Contextual Approach: Recognizing that self-care might look different for everyone, including, for example, simple meal preparation. #ot

You finally make time for self-care… and your brain immediately starts running inventory. Did I send that email? I should probably use this time more “productively.” I can relax after I finish one more thing. If this happens to you, it’s not a failure at rest. It’s a nervous system that learned safety through productivity. High-achievers don’t struggle with self-care because they don’t value it. They struggle because slowing down removes the distractions that keep the to-do list quiet. From a therapy perspective, the work isn’t “shutting the voice off.” It’s learning how to be with yourself when the urgency shows up, without obeying it. That takes practice. And support. And a lot of compassion. — Melissa Dowd, LMFT Therapy for high-achievers navigating anxiety, burnout & boundaries Virtual sessions in CA, FL, PA, OH & TX 👉 Follow @the.modern.teletherapist for mental health content that actually understands overfunctioning #HighAchievers #BurnoutRecovery #NervousSystemRegulation #TherapyEducation #MentalHealthAwareness

Many therapists were taught to do assessment first. Observe. Measure. Gather data. Then write the goals (often without the person). But when assessment comes first, the goals often don’t reflect the persons priorities. But when you start with goals, the work changes. You hear what the person actually wants to work toward. You understand what matters in their day to day life. You get clarity on direction before choosing what/how to assess. Then….. You assess what’s relevant. And you choose measures that are actually meaningful. The Burn In Model encourages goal setting prior to assessment. To learn more about the model and start using it in practice comment “BURN IN” to get a copy of the ebook. ❤️‍🔥 #Burn In, Not Out. x

Occupation isn’t just an activity — it’s an activity inside real life. ✨ Brushing teeth isn’t the same occupation for a rushed teen running late, a parent juggling a toddler, or someone relearning after a stroke. In OT, we zoom out: the person + the task + the environment + the time + the meaning. Because context is what turns “doing” into function. 👇 Tell me: what’s one everyday task that feels totally different depending on the situation? #OccupationalTherapy #OT #OccupationBasedPractice #OTEducation #FunctionalLiving ContextMatters Rehab NeuroRehab
