HEDeflection is a defense mechanism. It often shows up when accountability is required, but instead of taking responsibility for a situation or behavior within the marriage, one partner redirects the focus elsewhere. When someone is being corrected, or when an issue is brought to light especially something they may be blind to the healthy response would be, “Okay, I see that. I was wrong. I apologize.”
But instead, deflection sounds like:
“Well, you did this.”
“What about that time when you…?”
“You’re not perfect either.”
It becomes a cycle of what-ifs, past offenses, sarcasm, and hurtful statements. Sarcasm, especially when heavily used, becomes a weapon rather than a tool for communication. And that’s where conversations stop being productive and start becoming toxic. At that point, there is no real dialogue only defense and damage.
Deflection is also tied to a lack of emotional maturity and emotional intelligence. In a mature marriage, there is no scoreboard. No one is trying to “win.” It’s no longer me versus you it becomes what’s happening is affecting us.
Until one person decides to grow, to be mature, and to take responsibility, the cycle continues. Deflection replaces accountability. Responsibility is avoided. Reflection never happens. There’s no willingness to acknowledge where something was said wrong, done wrong, or even misunderstood. And sometimes, even when you can’t see your own fault clearly, you still have a responsibility to listen because you can’t always see yourself through your own mirror.
That’s why the mirror of your spouse matters. When your husband or wife brings something to your attention, it’s not always an attack it’s often a signal that something in the home is hurting. And in marriage, both partners have a responsibility to bring those issues to the surface so they can be addressed, healed, and corrected.
Because the longer deflection continues, the longer the home suffers. And the longer accountability is avoided, the more damage is done to the foundation of the marriage.
