A deviated uvula doesn’t always mean disease. In patients with a history of childhood surgery like cleft palate repair, this can be a completely normal post-surgical finding due to asymmetrical healing of the soft palate. The key is clinical correlation. Always rule out red flag signs of peritonsillar abscess or cranial nerve palsy before labeling it as pathological. 👨‍⚕️ Medicine is not just what you see — it’s what you interpret. #ent #medicine #surgery #doctorlife #medical

🤔 Make sure your say “ah…ah….” When you look at it! Curious if your vagus nerve is okay? 🌟 Your vagus nerve directly controls your swallowing and soft palate movement. 🔍 If you notice an unlevel soft palate or a deviated uvula, your left and right vagus nerves might have some imbalance, which could make your body struggle to regulate your brain and nervous system. 👫 Try this with a friend to see if they have it too! 📚 Follow if you want to learn why and how to rebalance it! 💡 P.S.: Most of the time, the vagus nerve is not the issue. 🧠 The vagus nerve is only one of the 12 cranial nerves in your body. Focusing solely on the vagus nerve means you’re only looking at 8% of the whole picture! Do you have trouble breathing? Could it be because of a deviated septum? Find out how you can tell if you have a deviated septum . . Septal deviation is a condition in which the septum, the wall of cartilage that divides the nostrils, is misaligned. This can cause problems with breathing and can lead to a range of other symptoms. . . One of the main ways in which septal deviation affects breathing is by obstructing the airways. If the septum is crooked or displaced, it can block the flow of air through the nose, making it difficult to breathe. This can cause symptoms such as difficulty breathing through the nose, snoring, and sleep apnea. . . There are several ways to diagnose septal deviation. The most common method is through a physical examination, during which the Dr. Kassir will look inside the nose using a lighted instrument called a nasal endoscope. Dr. Kassir may also order a CT scan or MRI to get a better view of the septum and surrounding structures. . . Treatment for septal deviation may include medications to reduce inflammation and swelling, as well as procedures to straighten the septum. One common treatment is septoplasty, a surgical procedure in which the septum is straightened and repositioned. This can help improve breathing and reduce other symptoms caused by the deviation. . . When even your Uvula is showing you a big sign of airway collapse at night... Your Uvula- that small tissue that hangs in the back of your throat, typically sits calmly and doesn’t interfere with airflow. But if it looks elongated, swollen, or “floppy,” it can be a clue that your airway is being stressed at night—often alongside snoring, mouth breathing, or disrupted sleep. If your airway is collapsing while you sleep, your breathing pattern can start working against your body instead of supporting it—impacting recovery, energy, focus, and overall health. At Real Smile, we evaluate airway breathing and oral anatomy, to help identify what may be contributing to nighttime breathing issues and discuss options to support better airflow. 😀 What is tissue in the back of the throat? "It resembles a boxing speed bag and some refer to it as your "dangly thing." These descriptions would be inaccurate. So we're going to set the record straight on this somewhat odd-looking part of your mouth. The actual term for it is your uvula. It affects your eating and speaking and plays a significant role in your sleeping and throat health. Get the entire lowdown on your uvula below and how you can keep it fit as a fiddle. Oral Anatomy Before learning what your uvula does, it's good to understand where the uvula is located and what surrounds it. It falls within your mouth's palate. Your hard palate is at the front of your mouth, consisting of a more bony structure, while the fleshier part in the back of the oral cavity is the soft palate. There you'll find your uvula or palatine uvula. It's a fleshy teardrop-shaped piece of tissue that hangs at the end of your soft palate near your throat or pharynx. What Does the Uvula Do? You've learned where the uvula is situated. Now to its function. Years ago, before modern science, many thought the uvula didn't serve a purpose. That has since been debunked. So what does the uvula do? Plenty. It stops food and liquid from entering your nasal cavity as it and the soft palate move upward when you swallow It helps in your ability to speak It stops you from choking as it triggers your gag reflex should a large piece of food or foreign object get to the back of your throat." -Colgate.com CLEFT OR BIFID UVULA A bifid uvula can be harmless. Sometimes people have a bifid uvula without any problems. -WebMD *Video used with permission* #dentalassistant #utah #uvula #teeth #oralanatomy #dentalassistingschool #dentalassistantschool #orem #dentallife #dds #utahgram #utahvalley #utahschool #tooth #april #utahphoto

As both a parent and a myofunctional therapist, I’ve been on this journey myself. My little one used to snore, mouth breathe, and even have night terrors. You could hear how enlarged his tonsils were just in the sound of his voice. On top of that, he was still bedwetting, which we later learned can actually be tied to poor sleep and breathing struggles. So the piece of advice is, don't "wait until they grow out of it" and don't jump right to surgery as the only option. Here’s what we’ve been doing: – Myofunctional therapy to retrain his tongue and breathing patterns – Supporting his environment to reduce inflammation and congestion – Orthodontic treatment to expand his palate and airway – Addressing a tongue tie that was holding his tongue down It’s still a work in progress, but the changes have been incredible. He’s no longer snoring, no longer mouth breathing, the night terrors have stopped, and the bedwetting is gone. His sleep, his energy, and his overall health have all improved so much—and that’s why I’m so passionate about helping other families find answers too. 👉If you want to see if this could work for you too just comment "quiz" below and we'll send you a free screening tool. #myofunctionaltherapy #earlyintervention #kidshealth #parentsofinstagram #crunchymoms #homeschool #holistichealth #healthandwellness #Barrie #toronto #vaughan #simcoecounty #barriemoms #innisfilmoms #torontoparents #torontomoms #consciousparenting

Some people have hidden little anatomy Easter eggs and never even know it. A split uvula is called a bifid uvula, and it happens in a small percentage of people. Add in things like a tiny preauricular pit near the ear or an extra nipple that looks like a mole, and suddenly you may be way rarer than you thought. Do you have any of these? #bifiduvula #anatomyfacts #medicalfacts #drjoe

At the school where I work, a patient reported to the student that he has always had a long uvula and that sometimes he bites it. The patient was actually able to cough his uvula up onto his tongue and show us how long it was. It came out quite far onto the tongue. It was excessively long, and we could definitely see why he would bite it. This is called uvular elongation. It wasn’t inflammation, it wasn’t uvulitis, it was true anatomical elongation. It was impeding his airway at times, affecting swallowing, talking, and even chewing. In that case, we encouraged him to go have it trimmed because chronic trauma like that is not something to ignore. #dentalhygiene #dentaleducation

👅 How to Check Tonsils When the View Is Tricky Sometimes it’s easy to see the back of the throat. But in kids—or adults—with large tonsils, mouth breathing, tongue-tie, or a narrow palate, the view can be much harder. Instead of tonsils, all you see is hard palate. That’s often a Mallampati class 4 view—and it’s an important clue. A few key tips that can make a big difference: ✔️ Sit upright ✔️ Use the sniffing position (chin neutral, gentle neck extension) ✔️ Avoid chin-tuck or over-extension ✔️ Ask for a gentle tongue extension and “ahhh” ✔️ Try slow mouth breathing to relax the throat If the tonsils still aren’t visible, that’s not a failure—it’s information. A crowded throat and limited view often go hand-in-hand with airway restriction. In those cases, further evaluation—like a CBCT or flexible scope exam—may be helpful to understand what’s happening beyond what you can see. 💬 Parents and providers: Have you ever struggled to get a clear view of the tonsils?
