Iridescent clouds, also known as rainbow clouds, are one of the most mesmerizing natural sky phenomena. These rare clouds display shimmering bands of pastel colors, similar to the effect of oil on water. The phenomenon occurs when tiny water droplets or ice crystals in the cloud scatter and diffract sunlight, creating a spectrum of iridescent colors. Unlike rainbows, which appear opposite the sun, iridescent clouds form near the sun and require very precise atmospheric conditions. The science behind cloud iridescence is linked to light diffraction. When the cloud’s particles are very small and uniform in size, they bend sunlight at just the right angles, producing pink, green, blue, and purple hues. Thin cirrus clouds, lenticular clouds, and altostratus clouds are the most common types to display this effect. Because of their delicate colors, iridescent clouds are best viewed when the sun is partially hidden by obstacles such as mountains or tall buildings, making the bright light easier to observe. Iridescent clouds are not only a visual wonder but also a signal of atmospheric conditions. Their presence often indicates that the upper atmosphere has high moisture content and that the cloud is in its early stages of formation. For weather watchers, spotting rainbow-colored clouds can be a sign of changing weather patterns. Photographers and skywatchers are especially drawn to these displays for their stunning and fleeting beauty. To witness iridescence in clouds, timing and location are crucial. They are best seen during mid-afternoon when the sun is high and behind thin clouds. Unlike rainbows, these glowing clouds can shift colors rapidly as the angle of sunlight changes. Their breathtaking display of natural atmospheric optics makes them a favorite subject in sky photography, meteorology, and nature observation, reminding us of the hidden wonders in Earth’s skies.

A diffraction grating is an optical device with a large number of equally spaced parallel slits or grooves. It causes light waves to spread out (diffract) into several directions and interfere with each other. White light (like from your bulb) is a mix of all colors — red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet. Each color bends a different amount when it hits the grating: • Red (longer wavelength) bends more. • Violet (shorter wavelength) bends less. So when you look through the diffraction grating, it splits the white light into a rainbow — just like a prism does, but using diffraction and interference instead of refraction. #physics

Part 1 | The Double Slit Experiment (More 👇) When particles like electrons or photons are fired one at a time toward a barrier with two slits, they create an interference pattern on the detector screen, just as waves would. This suggests that each particle passes through both slits simultaneously, behaving like a wave. But the crazy part is that if scientists place a detector to observe which slit the particle goes through, the interference pattern disappears, and they behave like discrete particles!!! This experiment showcases the strange nature of quantum mechanics, where the act of measurement affects the system, forcing it to "choose" between wave-like and particle-like behavior. The original double-slit experiment with light was first conducted by Thomas Young in 1801, demonstrating that light behaves as a wave by producing interference patterns. However, the quantum version, showing that particles like electrons also exhibit wave-like behavior, was developed much later. That happened in 1927 when physicist Clinton Davisson and Lester Germer (and independently George Paget Thomson) conducted experiments proving that electrons diffract like waves, confirming Louis de Broglie’s 1924 hypothesis that matter has wave-like properties. This work was pivotal in establishing wave-particle duality as a core principle of quantum mechanics. --- [Sources] (🎞 What the Bleep!? One of the most beautiful sights you can see in the jungles of Central and South America is the Blue Morpho Butterfly (Morpho menelaus)! Their famous blue coloration isn’t actually due to their pigment, but because of special wing scales that reflect and diffract light giving off their iconic blue iridescence. 🦋☀️🦋☀️🦋☀️🦋☀️🦋☀️🦋☀️🦋☀️🦋 #insects #macro #nature #insect #macrophotography #naturephotography #insectsofinstagram #bugs #photography #wildlife #insectphotography #entomology #butterfly #world #bug #naturelovers #animalia #perfection #animals #reels #reelsinstagram #damnnatureyouscary #butterflies #animal #captures #natureismetal #reelsvideo #instagramreels #insectos #wild

A fogbow is a special type of rainbow which is formed as sunlight travels through a small cloud or fog and the fog droplets diffract the sunlight. The color spectrum in a fogbow is usually white, red and blue. Fogbows are usually formed over a body of water or in an area with thin fog. It was my son’s idea to go for that early morning dog walk. Ever wondered why you can hear music from another room even without seeing the speaker? That’s thanks to diffraction! Sound waves bend around corners and through openings because their wavelengths are large. Light waves, on the other hand, have tiny wavelengths, so they don’t bend much—creating shadow regions instead. But if the opening is super small, even light can diffract just like sound! #Physics #Lightwave #DiffractionExplained #STEMLearning #minutesphysics#jee #neet
