My favorite resources for brain rewiring are DNRS and the Restore membership through @sarahjacksoncoaching. The DNRS program is a fully cognitive based program. The Restore membership takes more of a mind body and soul approach which includes cognitive and somatic practices. Both of these resources have been fundamental in my healing season! I spent over a decade with debilitating chronic illness and depression that ultimately landed me almost completely bed and wheelchair bound. After almost a decade of severe CFS/ME, chronic Lyme and symptoms that left me in bed for years on end I thought it was crazzzzzy to even consider the idea that daily visualisations could heal me ✨✨✨ People suggested visualisations to me a few times over the years and I always dismissed them - I have a REAL, PHYSICAL illness I’d say back! I thought using visualisations meant that my symptoms were all in my head, and I’d heard that so many times before from dismissive doctors… so the idea that I could heal in this way triggered me But using visualisations is about rewiring the brain to safety, and allowing the nervous system to come back into a parasympathetic state. It’s a science backed approach to healing using neuroplasticity principles that enables the body to heal Since I start visualisations using a technique I learnt in the DNRS program here are some things I’ve achieved: ✨worked for the first time in almost ten years ✨solo traveled Japan and Europe ✨7+ hour hikes ✨regular Pilates and yoga practice ✨live independently after years relying on my family to care for me ✨dramatic improvements in my cycles ✨neurological symptoms are gone ✨severe brain fog has improved dramatically!! I can read, study and work again ✨smell sensitivity gone The list goes onnnnnn!!!! So many people with chronic illness deal with severe fatigue even if they spend most of their time “resting”. This is almost always due to a dysfunctional nervous system. When your brain is stuck in a perpetual survival crisis, it’s not possible to truly rest and heal. The good news is that we can rewire our brains to allow our bodies to do what they were designed to do—heal. ❤️‍🩹 For me, one of the most impactful things for my chronic illness recovery has been brain retraining. The idea with this is to use visualization & other nervous system regulation tools to continually signal safety to the brain. Over time, the nervous system will start to shift into a parasympathetic state where healing can start to take place. 🫶🏻 Personally, I started with the DNRS program & have since also been through the Gupta Program. The tools I learned have changed my life and been a huge part of my chronic illness recovery. Keep in mind, brain retraining programs don’t heal you. They give you tools to help you heal you. It’s entirely possible to heal without a brain retraining program, but they can be an incredible resource for those with chronic illness. DNRS continues to be the best money I’ve ever spent on my health (even though it’s not a perfect program). I have a post titled “how do to a brain retraining visualization without spending a single penny” that shares more details on brain retraining. 🥰 Keep believing healing is possible, my dear friends. This caption is LIT. 👇 Identifying and interrupting Brain Loops was one of the first things I learned in my nervous system program*, and is still one of the most effective practices that I incorporate into my daily life. Different programs (Primal Trust, DNRS, etc.) use different terms for this concept, but the practice is basically the same. The goal is brain retraining by creating new neural pathways and un-learning maladaptive stress responses, i.e. symptoms, thoughts, behaviors, etc). Some examples of brain loops are: 🧠 Maladaptive thoughts/behaviors around triggers, for example: - keeping a detailed food/reaction journal - focusing on what you can't eat - feeling jealous of what others can eat 🧠 Maladaptive thoughts/behaviors around symptoms/diagnoses, for example: - scanning the body for symptoms, focusing on and tracking symptoms - predicting the future ("I can't go there/eat that or I will have symptoms." Etc.) - researching symptoms and diagnoses - scrolling symptom-focused social media 🧠 Maladaptive thoughts/behaviors around illness & healing: - Catastrophizing: "This won't work for me." "I will never get better." - Comparing: "She healed, so I bet she wasn't as sick as me." - Giving up, feeling hopeless, etc. "It's too late for me." - Identifying with your condition, complaining, talking about your symptoms constantly 🧠 Maladaptive behaviors: - Rushing - Perfectionism - Hyper-independence - Indecision - Pessimism 🧠 Even symptoms can be brain loops, such as anxiety, racing heart, insomnia, shallow breathing, headaches, fatigue, etc. *I worked with Luanne Hopkinson of @happy_without_histamine and she just launched her Brain Food program, which goes into more depth on all of this. It's a comprehensive nervous system healing program that includes elements of DNRS, EFT, NLP, somatics, and much more. It's affordable, paced, and includes community support (I'm one of your cheerleaders in the online community!).
