Your Ab Workout Is Making Your Belly Worse Stop doing ab workouts that are way too hard for you if you’re trying to lose your belly. I see this all the time. People jump straight into crazy core exercises—hanging leg raises, advanced crunch variations, or brutal ab circuits—thinking that’s the fastest way to get a six-pack. But here’s the reality: if you can only do one rep… or zero reps… that workout isn’t helping you. It’s just frustrating you, burning you out, and sometimes even injuring your back. Instead, you need movements that actually build momentum. In my program we use something called the Momentum Method (M&M). The idea is simple: start with regressive exercises that still activate your core, but are easier on the body so you can build strength without breaking yourself. One of my favorites is the medicine ball slam. You reach overhead, engage your core, and slam the ball down using your entire body. It’s a full-body movement, so you’re activating your core while also burning more calories because more muscles are working. Another great one is banded wood chops. This movement forces your core to stabilize while your upper and lower body move together. It’s powerful, controlled, and great for building rotational core strength. And if you’re just starting out, try an assisted plank. Instead of forcing a full plank and collapsing after a few seconds, keep your knees on the ground. You’re still activating the core, but with less stress on your body. As you get stronger, you can progress to a full plank. Remember this: a baby crawls before it walks. Don’t destroy your body trying to rush results. Build strength step by step, and the fat loss will follow. If you want defined abs, you need to actually train them like a muscle… not just throw them into a random bodyweight circuit at the end of your workout 💀And abs aren’t MADE in the kitchen, they’re REVEALED there. But you still need to build the muscle first, and that’s where weighted ab work comes in. Cable ab crunches are one of the best ways to do that. You can also use an ab crunch machine if your gym has that! 3️⃣ main cues to focus on 1) Curl your spine, don’t hinge your hips. Think about bringing the bottom of your sports bra to your belly button. This keeps tension on your abs instead of your hip flexors. 2) Keep hips mostly still. Your lower body shouldn’t be rocking back and forth. The movement should come from your core. You wanted abs right? So keep those hips still! 3) Keep your hands fixed by your head. Don’t pull the rope down with your arms. Your elbows and hands should stay in the same position while your abs do the work. So why do weighted ab exercises matter? Bodyweight ab circuits mostly train endurance, not muscle growth. Just like squats build legs and rows build your back, progressive overload builds abs. If you never challenge them with resistance, they won’t grow enough to show… even if your nutrition is on point. So stop treating he abs like another muscle. Train your abs directly, get stronger at it over time, and let nutrition reveal the definition you built. 😉

Think: ribs down, pelvis neutral, glutes slightly tight. Don’t over-arch your lower back, and don’t “suck in” your stomach brace 360° like you’re preparing for a light punch. Use this in planks, leg raises, dead bugs, and every core move. Stronger core, better posture, safer training brace first, reps later. 💪🔥
