Maxwell’s Dynamical Top: A 1/2 scale precision replica of the famous “Dynamical Top” created and demonstrated by the great physicist James Clerk Maxwell in 1857. The four color disk allowed Maxwell to see and study the direction of the angular momentum vector when a spinning object is subjected to a jolt/impact. After the top gets a flick from my hand note that one can see a circle of evenly changing color- the angular momentum vector points outward through the center of that circle. Balanced such that the spin point was placed at its center of mass, this unique top was used by Maxwell to experimentally test many theories about how the Earth and planets wobble as they spin. Swipe to see another astonishing property of this top described in a previous post. This beautiful historical replica was made by machinist and creator Jim Peever @machinedmarvels- and as far as I know the only other replicas of this device were made in the 1880’s! ➡️ Follow the link in my profile for info on where to get many of the amazing items featured here on @physicsfun #angularmomentum #rotation #torque #vector #vectoraddition #precession #physicsfun #physics #physicstoy #MaxwellsTop #dynamical #spiral #friction #rollingwithoutslipping #spinningtop #science #gyroscope #gyroscopic #scienceisawesome

@science.sbmedia
The Dynamical Casimir Effect (DCE) is a quantum phenomenon predicted by quantum field theory (QFT), where an oscillating uncharged mirror in a vacuum generates electromagnetic radiation, or photons. Unlike classical physics, where electromagnetic radiation arises from moving charged particles like electrons, the DCE occurs due to the interaction between the moving mirror and quantum vacuum fluctuations. This interaction causes virtual photons (those that exist momentarily due to quantum uncertainty) to be upconverted into real photons, which then propagate away from the mirror. The key to this effect lies in the time-dependent boundary condition imposed by the mirror's motion. As the mirror oscillates, it influences the quantum electromagnetic field in the surrounding vacuum, causing the energy of the mirror to be transferred to the field. This results in the creation of real photons, a process that is unique to quantum mechanics and has no counterpart in classical physics, where radiation typically only arises from accelerating charges. Although the Dynamical Casimir Effect has a solid theoretical foundation, it remains experimentally elusive. The main challenge in observing the effect is the difficulty in moving the mirror fast enough to generate a detectable amount of photons. However, recent experimental proposals have made significant strides in overcoming these challenges, and it is expected that experimental verification of the DCE may be achieved in the near future. --- 💡 Learn More: Dissipative dynamical Casimir effect in terms of complex spectral analysis in the symplectic Floquet space - Oxford Academic (https://academic.oup.com/ptep/article/2020/12/12A107/5991414) [Source] (🎼 Love On A Real Train - Tangerine Dream) (🎞 givingbackadrian/ YT) (https://youtu.be/eDzqqsTFywk?si=F5TXYDlf5jfepm8h) --- @science.sbmedia 🪐🔭 #DynamicalCasimirEffect #QuantumFieldTheory #PhotonCreation #QuantumMechanics #VacuumFluctuations

Can motion create light from nothing? welcome to the dynamical casimir effect – a mind-blowing quantum phenomenon! an uncharged mirror oscillating in a vacuum can literally generate real photons ✨ from quantum fluctuations – no electricity needed! unlike classical physics, where only charged particles radiate, this is pure quantum wizardry think: virtual photons turned real by a vibrating mirror! although still hard to observe, scientists are getting closer to proving this fascinating effect in the lab why it matters: it challenges our classical understanding of energy and shows how the quantum vacuum isn’t truly empty! The Dynamical Casimir Effect is a quantum phenomenon where a pair of mirrors, with at least one moving at extremely high speeds, can generate real photons (light) from a vacuum. This happens because the motion disturbs the quantum vacuum fluctuations, causing virtual particles to become real. It’s a striking example of how “empty” space isn’t truly empty-and how quantum mechanics allows light to emerge from “nothing.” Mirors That Create Light From Nothing? take This mind-blowing quantum phenomenon is called the Dynamical Casimir Effect - when a moving mirror generates real photons from the vacuum. Bistable mechanisms are all around us, but they aren't all equal. We at Craighill especially appreciate a satisfying click. From an engineering perspective, that means a higher "activation energy" to transition from one stable state to another in the dynamical system. For the light switch, that meant a bigger spring. We aren't electricians (yet), so we had to design and print this external box. One bonus with this approach is that we get to see the beautiful bistable mechanism at work, instead of it being hidden in the wall. What's your favorite bistable click in your life?
