Curious sperm whale 🤯🐋📐🔥👋 | While observing a mega pod of sperm whales far offshore - something unforgettable happened! One particularly curious whale broke away from the group and approached us with its massive head gliding just beneath the surface. Out of nowhere it blasted a rapid series of powerful echolocation clicks! These clicks, known as codas, are how sperm whales communicate and navigate. At the surface - the codas often part of social chatter composed of sequences of patterned clicks that scientists believe may serve as individual or group identifiers. These sounds are also used for echolocation - especially when exploring their surroundings or investigating food like the Humboldt squid they were eating that day 🦑🍽️😳 It was one of those moments that just stops you in your tracks - a wild reminder of how smart and mysterious these ocean giants really are every time they disappear into the deep. 🎥: @whatcameradoyouhave | shot with @nomad_diving #spermwhale #spermwhales #cachalote #cachalotes #beautifuldestinations #reels #savetheocean #cetacean #nomaddiving

How would you react if a huge sperm whale approached, opening its massive jaws and directing a series of powerful clicks at you? 🐋 📽️ @bluescape.th x @b.blanked Despite their imposing presence, these magnificent creatures pose no threat to humans. The clicking sounds you hear are actually a form of echolocation, similar to sonar, used by sperm whales to navigate the deep ocean and find their favorite food - giant squid. Although such an encounter would be unforgettable, watching patiently from a respectful distance and letting them come to you on their terms is the best way to appreciate these oceanic giants, while prioritizing the safety of both whale and human.

It’s an incredible feeling being scanned using sound ! This curious Sperm whale is using her Sonar “voice “ to investigate my entire physical being. Taking sound healing to another level ! Sperm whales use echo location to see their environment particularly when hunting deep in the oceans darker places. In Their world sound is essential to hunt, see and communicate with loved ones. It’s imperative that we limit the increasing amount of industrial noise we are polluting the oceans with. Shipping, seismic blasting and undersea mining are painfully disruptive and harmful to cetaceans that are incredibly sensitive to sound. #cachalot #spermwhale #whales #soundhealing #soundtherapy #whalesong #freediving #diving #blueplanet

Echolocation is a biological process used by animals to locate objects and navigate their environment. By emitting high-pitched sounds and listening for the echoes produced, animals are able to determine the distance, direction, and size of objects around them. Many species of bats, whales, and dolphins use echolocation as their primary means of navigation and hunting. Bats emit sounds that bounce off objects and return as echoes, allowing them to locate and capture prey in complete darkness. Whales and dolphins use echolocation to communicate with one another, navigate their underwater environment, and locate food. Whales can adjust the frequency and intensity of its echolocation clicks to best suit the surrounding environment and optimize the information it receives from echoes #Echolocation #Bats #Whales #Dolphins #Navigation #Hunting #Communication #Underwater #whalewatching #whales # #marinebiology #whale #Sonar #Nature #wildlife #wildlifeencounter #sea #sealife #sea #babyanimal #clickers

Whales blow… -Imagine if breathing wasn’t automatic. -Like… you had to consciously decide to stay alive every few minutes. That’s a whales life. They manually flex muscles to open their blowhole, take a breath, then let it snap shut into a watertight seal before diving back into the abyss. This is not slow motion I was following the calf playing with a piece of shark… when suddenly, the mother was standing in front of us, motionless. My heart soared 🫶🏻😅 Nothing in slow motion, all real life. Turn on the sound 🔊 The incredible part: we shared this moment with locals who had never seen orcas — and who culturally associate them with fear. Goosebumps for everyone 😳✨ 👉 This unique encounter was possible with patience: we observed their behavior and the hunt using the hydrophone and drone, waited until they had eaten, and being the only boat, we gave them space and respect. #orca #orcinusorca #bajacaliforniasur #laventanabcs #aguaceaexplora #gopro

Magical moments like this have been life changing. Sperm whales use echolocation (clicks) to explore their surroundings, this includes divers. I've never felt pain or been uncomfortable when a sperm whale does this in close proximity to us. In fact, my experience after diving with them for well over a decade has been that it feels very similar to how it sounds/feels while listening to them on a phone or tablet. Can you feel it, yes. Depending on your proximity to the front of the head it can increase or decrease. They are an incredible species and deserve our respect and admiration. I am convinced they are much smarter than us humans in so many ways. Filmed under permit. #spermwhales #whales #Underwater #sea #ocean #wildlife #Cetaceans #nature

Livyatan vs. Megalodon: The Ultimate Miocene Showdown 🐋 vs 🦈 13 million years ago, the oceans weren't big enough for both. Livyatan, a raptorial sperm whale with 36 cm teeth, used echolocation and a reinforced skull to ram its rivals. Megalodon, the largest shark ever, possessed a bone-crushing bite designed to saw through muscle and fins. In a head-to-head clash, Livyatan’s mammalian intelligence and sonar gave it the defensive edge. However, if Megalodon landed a successful ambush on the whale's fins, the fight was over. One was a living battering ram; the other was the ultimate biological buzzsaw. 🌊 Who do you think ruled the ancient seas? 👇 #Prehistoric #Livyatan #Megalodon #dinosaurs #dinosaur #Paleontology #ExtinctAnimals #ScienceFacts Sources: Lambert, O., et al.
