EES stands for ‘Entry Exit System’ which is a new automated computer system that tracks when non-EU nationals (that includes us Brits) go in and out of most of Europe. It’s set to replace stamps.
⚠️ WHEN DOES THIS COME IN? ⚠️
EES begins on 12th Oct but there’s a 6 month gradual rollout and so it’s likely that not many places will be up and running straight away.
⚠️ HOW WILL I KNOW IF IT’S AFFECTING MY JOURNEY? ⚠️
Some places have said it will be up and running on Sunday including Estonia, Czechia and Luxembourg but even there they haven’t confirmed whether it will be for every single flight. It’s going to take a while to see how it plays out...
⚠️ WHAT’S AN EES KIOSK? ⚠️
To help speed things up, airports, train stations and ports have installed EES self service kiosks. This allows you to ‘pre-register’ so that when you get to border control, they’ll simply swipe your passport and all the needed info for EES will be come up.
⚠️ WHAT IF I DON’T USE AN EES KIOSK? ⚠️
If you can’t find one, it’s not working or need extra assistance, you would just go to border control as normal and they will do a manual EES check with you if it’s required.
⚠️ WHERE WILL I FIND AN EES KIOSK? ⚠️
Ask yourself: at what stage of your journey does your passport normally get stamped? Wherever that is, the EES kiosks are likely to be just before it.
For flights from the UK, this would be after you land but before you go through to arrivals.
For the Eurostar at St Pancras, the ferry at Dover and the Eurotunnel at Folkestone however, this would be done before you leave the UK.
For all return journeys, you would do the checks before you board your transport home.

If you are flying in or out of Europe right now you need to know about this.
The EES — Entry/Exit System — is the EU’s new biometric border control that rolled out fully on April 10th. Every non-EU traveller now has to submit facial scans and fingerprints when crossing the Schengen border for the first time. Lisbon is one of the airports where two to four hour waits have already been reported. And Portugal has already had to suspend biometric collection at departures on weekends just to stop people missing their flights.
Here is what you need to know right now:
The EES lines come AFTER security. Do not stop for a coffee or a pastel de nata before you have checked how long the lines are. I know. It is hard. But trust me.
If you are flying INTO Portugal this summer, EES applies at arrivals. Build in extra time and do not book tight connections.
If you are flying OUT of Portugal, biometric collection at departures has been temporarily suspended on weekends — but that could change. Aim for a minimum three hour buffer before your flight right now. Do not cut it close.
Your first registration is the slowest. Once your fingerprints and face are stored, future entries just require a quick scan. So the first time is the painful one.
Use the automated kiosks if available — they are faster than the manual lanes. Have your passport open to your photo page, glasses off and face uncovered before you reach the machine. Every extra ten seconds per person makes the line longer for everyone.

OUEurope’s Entry/Exit System (EES) has been rolling out since October 12, 2025 and is due to be fully operational on April 10, 2026 across the 29 European countries using the system.
It records passport details, entry and exit dates, and biometric data like a facial image and/or fingerprints for short-stay non-EU travelers, including many UK, US, Canadian, and Australian visitors. The EU says it is meant to modernize border checks, but reports from airports and travel groups say some travelers are already facing long waits and missed connections during the rollout.
What to do:
- Add more connection time if you are entering Schengen as a non-EU traveler, especially this summer.
- Expect your first EES registration to take longer because border staff may collect your photo and fingerprints.
- Keep track of your 90 days in any 180-day period yourself. EES will now record entries and exits digitally.
- If you can, choose less busy arrival times or airports to avoid the worst queues.
- Keep your documents ready and do not plan a tight onward connection right after passport control.

So. The EU's brought in a new system that tracks when non-EU people (hi, that's us now) enter and exit Europe. It's called EES. It's replacing those cute little passport stamps, which is sad, but here we are. 🥹
They've installed self-service kiosks at airports, ports and train stations so you can "pre-register" and speed through border control. You scan your passport, do your fingerprints, take a mugshot that somehow always looks worse than your passport photo, and you're done. 👍
Started 12th Oct but it's rolling out gradually, so your airport might not have them yet. If they do, they'll be just before border control. If they don't, border control will just do the checks manually.
Honestly? It's fine. Took about 5 - 10 mins. ☺️

3. impressões digitais (para pessoas com 12 anos ou mais, salvo exceções)

• Após 10 de abril de 2026, a meta é que os carimbos deixem de ser usados (“abolidos”) para quem está sob o regime do EES. 
• O objetivo é modernizar o controle de fronteiras, permitir uma verificação mais confiável de quem está “overstay” (ultrapassou o prazo permitido de 90 dias), reduzir fraudes de identidade, e agilizar o fluxo nos aeroportos.

🚨Here’s the rundown:
The EU’s new EES digital border system rolled out in April replacing passport stamps for many non-EU travelers with facial scans, fingerprints, and digital entry registration the first time you use the system. At the same time, spring travel demand has surged and summer is right around the corner.
⏰ The result? Long passport control lines & possible missed connections. Airport travelers are reporting some of the worst delays right now at:
• Amsterdam Airport Schiphol – waits of 45–90+ minutes, with some spikes over 2 hours
• Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport – waits of 60–120+ minutes during busy connection periods
• Rome Fiumicino Airport – waits of 45–90+ minutes, especially on long-haul arrival waves
• Lisbon Airport – waits of 45–90+ minutes, with occasional longer delays during morning peaks
What to do:
• use the restroom BEFORE getting in line
• fill your water bottle
• keep snacks with you
• charge your phone
• have passport + boarding pass ready
• wear shoes you can stand in
• book flights at non-peak times when possible (early afternoon or later evening can be easier than morning rushes)
💰If you can afford it:
Some airports offer VIP / fast-track entry options that can be worth it at busy hubs like London Heathrow Airport, Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, Rome Fiumicino Airport, and Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.
