How to use the new EES kiosks☝️WATCH THIS before your next trip to Europe 🇪🇺 💾 And don’t forget to save and share for next time you travel! ⚠️ WHAT IS EES? ⚠️ EES stands for ‘Entry Exit System’ which is a new automated computer system that tracks when non-EU nationals (that includes us Brits) go in and out of most of Europe. It’s set to replace stamps. ⚠️ WHEN DOES THIS COME IN? ⚠️ EES begins on 12th Oct but there’s a 6 month gradual rollout and so it’s likely that not many places will be up and running straight away. ⚠️ HOW WILL I KNOW IF IT’S AFFECTING MY JOURNEY? ⚠️ Some places have said it will be up and running on Sunday including Estonia, Czechia and Luxembourg but even there they haven’t confirmed whether it will be for every single flight. It’s going to take a while to see how it plays out... ⚠️ WHAT’S AN EES KIOSK? ⚠️ To help speed things up, airports, train stations and ports have installed EES self service kiosks. This allows you to ‘pre-register’ so that when you get to border control, they’ll simply swipe your passport and all the needed info for EES will be come up. ⚠️ WHAT IF I DON’T USE AN EES KIOSK? ⚠️ If you can’t find one, it’s not working or need extra assistance, you would just go to border control as normal and they will do a manual EES check with you if it’s required. ⚠️ WHERE WILL I FIND AN EES KIOSK? ⚠️ Ask yourself: at what stage of your journey does your passport normally get stamped? Wherever that is, the EES kiosks are likely to be just before it. For flights from the UK, this would be after you land but before you go through to arrivals. For the Eurostar at St Pancras, the ferry at Dover and the Eurotunnel at Folkestone however, this would be done before you leave the UK. For all return journeys, you would do the checks before you board your transport home. 📣 LET ME KNOW… If you have any more questions!! I have tried my best to keep it as simple as possible!! ☝️ Be prepared. This is Europe’s new Entry and Exit System (EES) that began October 12. It is being introduced gradually over the next 6 months in 29 European countries. We flew into Rome, Italy (FCO), and here’s what happened when we landed: → There were machines along the way to passport control for non-EU citizens. We only saw 5 machines (one didn’t work) but then found out there were more further down. → The lines weren’t terrible, but it still was an additional line that took about 10-15 min. → The machine scanned our passport, asked several questions, took a photo, and took fingerprints. → Then a worker put a sticker on my passport, noting that mine was complete. But my husband and many others did not get a sticker because the machines did not work correctly with photos and/or fingerprints. But they still let them all through. → Then we went through passport control like normal and got a stamp in our passport (which we thought would happen 🤷‍♀️). Overall, it wasn’t a terrible experience, but were a few hiccups and it took a few extra minutes. Not sure what will happen next time with my husband since he didn’t get a sticker. Travel season + a new digital system = mass chaos in some airports. 🚨Here’s the rundown: The EU’s new EES digital border system rolled out in April replacing passport stamps for many non-EU travelers with facial scans, fingerprints, and digital entry registration the first time you use the system. At the same time, spring travel demand has surged and summer is right around the corner. ⏰ The result? Long passport control lines & possible missed connections. Airport travelers are reporting some of the worst delays right now at: • Amsterdam Airport Schiphol – waits of 45–90+ minutes, with some spikes over 2 hours • Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport – waits of 60–120+ minutes during busy connection periods • Rome Fiumicino Airport – waits of 45–90+ minutes, especially on long-haul arrival waves • Lisbon Airport – waits of 45–90+ minutes, with occasional longer delays during morning peaks What to do: • use the restroom BEFORE getting in line • fill your water bottle • keep snacks with you • charge your phone • have passport + boarding pass ready • wear shoes you can stand in • book flights at non-peak times when possible (early afternoon or later evening can be easier than morning rushes) 💰If you can afford it: Some airports offer VIP / fast-track entry options that can be worth it at busy hubs like London Heathrow Airport, Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, Rome Fiumicino Airport, and Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. ☀️ Summer tip: Book longer layovers in Europe this summer. The EU's brought in a new system that tracks when non-EU people (hi, that's us now) enter and exit Europe. It's called EES. It's replacing those cute little passport stamps, which is sad, but here we are. 🥹 They've installed self-service kiosks at airports, ports and train stations so you can "pre-register" and speed through border control. You scan your passport, do your fingerprints, take a mugshot that somehow always looks worse than your passport photo, and you're done. 👍 Started 12th Oct but it's rolling out gradually, so your airport might not have them yet. If they do, they'll be just before border control. If they don't, border control will just do the checks manually. Honestly? It's fine. Took about 5 - 10 mins. ☺️

The new exit and entry system was recently implemented in Italy at Rome’s Fiumicino airport. This system is for non-EU citizens who are traveling within the Schengen Zone. It should help speed up the process at the borders, but will do away with physical passport stamps in lieu of digital stamps. There are a few exceptions for some types of travelers, so be sure to research whether this applies to you or not. According to the Italian consulate, “EES will be an automated IT system for registering travelers from third countries, both short-stay visa holders and visa-exempt travelers, each time they cross an EU external border. The system will register the person’s name, type of travel document, biometric data (fingerprints and captured facial images) and the date and place of entry and exit, in full respect of fundamental rights and data protection. It will also record refusals of entry. EES will replace the current system of manual stamping of passports, which is time consuming, does not provide reliable data on border crossings, and does not allow a systematic detection of over-stayers (travelers who have exceeded the maximum duration of their authorized stay).” Have you used these machines before?
