Did you know some airplanes can fly up to six hours after one of their engines has failed? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The Airbus A350 has a so-called ETOPS rating of 370. Meaning in case one of the two engines fails, the plane can continue to an alternate airport, even if the airport is 370 minutes away from where the engine failure happened. Just for some more information here is the requirements in the The requirement in 14 CFR 121.161 is for two-engine aircraft to stay less than 60 minutes from an adequate airport at a one-engine inoperative, standard condition, still-air cruise speed. To operate with a longer diversion time and a more direct routing between some city pairs, special procedures for maintenance, flight operations, dispatch, aircraft and passenger protection, aircraft configuration and reliability must be done. The ETOPS Maintenance Program, as specified in this section, supplements the Continuous Airworthiness Maintenance Program (CAMP). This manual is used by all Maintenance personnel involved in ETOPS. The ETOPS Maintenance Program is designed to prevent flight diversions and for the protection of the aircraft, crew and passengers if a diversion becomes necessary. Procedures in this section decrease the probability of a diversion and make sure that a diversion can be safely made if necessary. Enter ETOPS and EDTO — regulations that define how far an aircraft can fly from a suitable diversion airport on one engine. What ETOPS Means 🧠 Originally: Extended-range Twin-engine Operational Performance Standards It applies mainly to twin-engine aircraft like the Boeing 777, Boeing 787, and Airbus A350. If one engine fails, the aircraft must be able to reach an alternate airport within a certified time limit at single-engine cruise speed. Common ETOPS approvals ⏱️ • 120 minutes • 180 minutes • 240 minutes • 330 minutes (used on ultra-long routes) 330 minutes = 5.5 hours on one engine. That’s serious reliability. What is EDTO? 🌐 EDTO = Extended Diversion Time Operations It’s the ICAO term and applies to aircraft with two or more engines. So technically, even three- or four-engine aircraft fall under EDTO rules if flying far from alternates. Why It Exists 🔧 Because engine reliability improved massively. Modern turbofans have extremely low in-flight shutdown rates. Certification requires: • Proven engine reliability data • Enhanced maintenance programs • Additional fire suppression capability • Redundant electrical and hydraulic systems • Specialized crew training Operational Planning 📊 Before an ETOPS flight: • Specific alternate airports are selected • Weather must meet stricter criteria • Fuel planning includes single-engine diversion • Critical systems must be fully operational Even cargo aircraft like the MD-11 or 777F operate under extended diversion planning. Important Clarification ⚠️ ETOPS is not about flying on one engine normally. It’s about proving you can safely continue if one fails. Modern twins are so reliable that long-haul twinjets replaced many four-engine aircraft like the Airbus A340 and Boeing 747. ETOPS is basically engineering confidence backed by statistics, testing, and regulation. It’s not risk-taking.
