As Kyle said in the last post, we not only surpassed our record of 131 python eggs removed, but we more than TRIPLED our efforts from last year!! Which is so rewarding for us considering the literal years of research, time, energy, blood and sweat we’ve put into figuring this out. We feel strongly that this strategy is especially effective in managing these invasive species. To put it into perspective, the amount of eggs we removed this season is more than the amount of pythons we’ve removed over 5 years. Florida scientists witnessed a Burmese python swallowing full-sized deer whole 👀🐍 #OnlyinFlorida By the time they got to the scene, the python had already swallowed about half of the 77-lb deer, and it took about 30 more minutes for the 15-ft female python to consume the other half. Researchers in the region recently proved that Burmese pythons are able to stretch their jaws wide enough to swallow large prey, such as fully grown deer and alligators whole. Burmese pythons are one of the most concerning invasive species in the region. According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), severe declines in mammal populations throughout Everglades National Park have been linked to the species. A study found that populations of raccoons had declined 99.3%, opossum populations declined 98.9%, and bobcats 87.5% since 1997. Other mammals have “effectively disappeared” over time, such as marsh rabbits, cottontail rabbits and foxes, according to the USGS. They have no natural predators in the Everglades ecosystem, and by their second year of life are larger than most of our native animals. They have especially devastated mammal populations over decades of being here. This particular big mama had 76 eggs in her nest!! By removing her and destroying her eggs, that inevitably saves hundreds of native animals. Please, remember, @fl_fwc offers an amnesty program for pets that are no longer wanted. My only concern was weather or not we got the video! We came across this 175lb female coiled up next to the waters edge. The tall grass almost completely obscured her from our view. Instinctively I jumped off the truck and ran down to where I saw something that didn’t look like it was supposed to be there. It immediately became clear, that this was going to be one heck of a catch. As soon as the snake saw me standing there, she darted off, but I followed with a diving grab on her body and then pinned the head down with my belly! That’s right… got her with the belly grab! Once the head was under control, I started to realize just how big she was. You’ll can tel how excited I was, even though I still had to figure out how to get her up the hill and into the truck! Needless to say, I was in my happy place.
