HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DOG TO FETCH 🎾 Save this post for future reference 💛 Did you know National Fetch Day is this Saturday October 19th?! !! Make sure you start teaching fetch indoors with NO distractions around to increase your chance of success !! Steps:  1. Build Value. Get your dog excited and interested in the toy by waving it around or playing tug of war.  2. Develop the Chase. You want to reward your dog for wanting to play with the toy. Once your dog is latched onto the toy, mark and reward with tons of treats.  3. Teach “Bring It”. Start with teasing the dog and then toss the toy 1-2 steps away. Once your dog grabs the toy in their mouth, call your dog back with tons of excitement. When your dog returns with the toy, give lots of treats.  4. Build the “Return”. Once you start throwing a bit farther, you can build the return by using a short leash to guide them towards you or running backwards to get your dog to follow you.  5. Increase distance and distractions. Once your dog can reliably fetch their toy indoors, you can either increase distractions by going outside and increase the distance by throwing the toy farther with a ball launcher.  6. If your dog is not running back to you or becomes uninterested in the ball, return to one of the earlier steps to get more engagement and success!
