An interesting fact is that while Powell was nominated for Best Original Score in 2011, he famously lost to The Social Network. While Trent Reznor’s score was groundbreaking, many film score enthusiasts (especially by 2026) view Powell’s loss as one of the biggest “Academy robberies” in history. Powell used a unique blend of Scottish bagpipes, Irish whistles, and a massive orchestral brass section to create a sonic landscape that felt both ancient and futuristic.
