Lying face down in prone is probably everyone’s least favourite position (mine included 😅) If you tend get uncomfortable in your lower back rather than your full core or glutes, here’s what to fix 👇🏼 ➡️ Think length, not lift. Reach your legs long behind you and keep them hip-distance apart ➡️ Keep your chin chucked and your neck long ➡️ Most importantly: press your pubic bone into the mat and gently lift your belly button away from it These small shifts will take the pressure off your lower back and let your glutes and core do their job. From there, you can layer on all the fun stuff, like leg lifts, arm reaches or full swimming, without any strain in your back. 🚨 Remember: it’s never about how high you lift your legs or arms. Looks like a medieval torture device... But people do crazy things to stop back pain. Here’s the kicker... Most people treat the back. They stretch the hamstrings. They ice the spine. But they ignore the SIDE of the body. It’s called the Lateral Line. Think of it like the brake cables on a bike... if they get tight, the whole frame warps. The major players here: The Lats (under your arm) The QL (deep lower back muscle) The Vastus Lateralis (side of your thigh) When these get glued down... your back takes the beating. Try this test right now. Stand up. Keep your feet together. Bend to the side. Do you move freely? Or do you feel like a rusty gate hinge? If you’re stiff... you have work to do. I broke down how to open the QL in my Spiral Line video (go watch it)... but today we look at the legs. The Vastus Lateralis. Get a foam roller. Put it on the side of your thigh. Roll. It will hurt. You might cry. ?? Do it anyway. Fix the side... save the back. Next up is the Superficial Front Line. If you sit at a desk all day... yours is definitely tight. To improve depth: • Soften the knees to reduce threat • Initiate the fold from the hips, not the lower back • Maintain length in the spine as you descend • Use slow, controlled exhales to down-regulate tone • Pause where resistance appears instead of pushing through it Progress comes from control and ease, not force. This is how mobility is rebuilt — not chased. Save this and practice with intention.
