The 2 beat kick is the most efficient way to swim freestyle. It’s the easiest, it takes the least energy, and if it’s done right, you can still swim quite fast. The reason is the best technique is simple! Your legs have the biggest muscles in your body. That’s why kicking less actually helps you swim longer and stay relaxed. 💡 What is a 2 beat kick? It’s one kick per arm stroke. Instead of kicking nonstop, your legs only support the stroke. 🦵 The most important rule Kick on the same side as your arm stroke. Right arm + right leg and left arm + left leg. Cross kicking breaks your rotation and makes pulling harder. ⚡ Timing is very important here! The downward motion of the kick should happen when your hand passes your head. This creates double propulsion as your arm and leg working together. 🚀 One small detail Because you kick less often, each kick can be slightly bigger and more powerful. 🏆 Learn this and freestyle starts to feel calmer, lighter, and more efficient. ‼️ Swim Success Founders Club Very soon, Swim Success moves to subscription. It’s not just about power but also about technique and rhythm. Here are the key tips to improve your kick: 🫧 Kick from the Hips • Generate movement from your hips, not your knees. • Keep your legs straight but relaxed to minimize drag. 🫧 Stay Streamlined • Point your toes and relax your ankles for a smooth, efficient kick. • Avoid wide, energy-draining movements. 🫧 Control Your Rhythm • Use small, consistent kicks. • Match your kick tempo to your breathing and stroke for balance. Practice these techniques regularly to build an effective and energy-saving kick that enhances your front crawl. A well-executed kick isn’t just about speed—it’s the foundation for a great swim! #swimtechnique #freestyleswimming #swimlife

Freestylers can use the exact same six beat kick and still time it completely differently. Even at the elite level, kick rhythm and timing aren’t always the same. And the timing of the kick is often directly linked to how the arms are timed relative to each other. Check out these two swimmers: Watch what happens when the hand enters the water. For one swimmer, the same side leg is kicking. For the other, it’s the opposite leg. Can you spot which is which? The more swimmers use opposition timing with the arms, the more likely a same side kick will happen during entry. The more overlap they use with the arms, the more likely you’ll see an opposite side kick on entry. Neither is automatically better. They’re just different ways to organize the stroke. By seeing which leg is kicking on entry, you can help swimmers match their kick rhythm to their stroke timing so they can swim as fast as possible. Follow @andrewksheaff for more on the key skills in swimming, and how to improve them.

Master the basics first, then build speed and efficiency. 1️⃣ Freestyle (Front Crawl) • Streamline body position • High elbow catch • Strong backward pull • Continuous flutter kick • Smooth side breathing 2️⃣ Backstroke • Flat body on the water surface • Continuous arm rotation • High elbow catch underwater • Steady flutter kick • Stable head and hips 3️⃣ Breaststroke • Long glide in streamline • Out-sweep and in-sweep arms • Powerful whip kick • Timing: pull → breathe → kick → glide • Head stays low and relaxed 4️⃣ Butterfly • Body undulation from the core • Simultaneous arm pull • Strong dolphin kick (2 kicks per stroke) • Breathe forward with minimal lift • Powerful and rhythmic finish Every stroke builds balance, strength, and control in the water.

Most swimmers think a stronger kick means kicking faster. What’s often overlooked is that where the kick starts matters far more than how hard you kick. Effective freestyle kicking starts from the hips, not the knees. Underwater video analysis consistently shows that swimmers who bend excessively at the knees create frontal drag. The thigh drops, the lower leg pushes water forward instead of backward, and the body position breaks. The kick may feel powerful, but it actually slows the swimmer down. Efficient swimmers initiate the kick from hip movement. The legs stay long and relaxed, with only a small natural knee bend. The foot moves like a whip, transferring motion from the hip through the leg to the toes. A good cue is simple: your knees should follow the kick, not lead it. When the kick comes from the hips, three things happen immediately: •hips stay higher •drag decreases •rhythm connects better with rotation This is why many distance and open water swimmers use small kicks but still maintain strong body position. Technical fact: Biomechanical studies show propulsion in freestyle kicking comes primarily from hip-driven motion, while excessive knee flexion increases drag and reduces efficiency. Don’t kick harder. Kick longer. Let the movement start at the hips.

Best when: – you need to stay up for a long time – keep your hands free – the most stable position in water 3. Freestyle kick Make small, fast kicks from the hips. Best when: – short-term support – staying afloat between movements – requires more energy The calmer your legs, the calmer you stay. #swimtechnique #freestyleswimming #swimlife
