The Science Behind Foam Rolling & Myofascial Release Foam rolling is a form of self-myofascial release (SMR), meaning it targets the myofascia—the connective tissue surrounding muscles. The idea is that applying pressure helps reduce tension, improve mobility, and aid in recovery. Research suggests foam rolling: ✅ Increases short-term flexibility by reducing muscle stiffness ✅ May reduce soreness by improving blood flow and flushing out metabolic waste ✅ Enhances range of motion without decreasing strength (unlike static stretching pre-workout) What Foam Rolling Won’t Do ❌ It doesn’t “break up” adhesions or knots (your fascia isn’t like clay—it’s more complex than that) ❌ It won’t replace strength, mobility, or stability work for long-term movement quality ❌ It’s not a magic fix for injuries or pain (addressing imbalances is key) So, Should You Foam Roll? For me, I love it. I feel good after, it helps me move better, and it’s a part of my routine. But everybody is different. Some people swear by it, while others don’t feel much of a difference. If you find it helps with soreness or mobility, go for it. If not, focus on active recovery, mobility drills, and strength work.
