Credit @thehomesteadingrd 🌱Welcome to the wonderful world of FODDER. Fodder is a nutrient-dense, inexpensive food source for livestock throughout the winter months. 1 pound of grain creates 4 pounds of fodder! Pigs, cows, goats, chickens, rabbits… they all love it! I’ll even catch the kitties chewing on some. Fodder is super simple to grow and you don’t need much space! I grow mine in a bathroom because it can handle the moisture well 👍🏼. I’ve done it in a laundry room and kitchen, too! Fodder is created through the act of soaking & sprouting grain and then letting it mature a few more days until it has grown fresh greens on top. Depending on your type of livestock, you may want to let it go a little longer or shorter. Chickens at at risk of crop impaction, so you don’t want the greens on top to get tooooo long. I’ve found that 7 days is perfect for my environment. All you need is a container with drain holes, fresh water and some organic, whole grains (barley, oats, wheat, and rye are most common). ❎No soil ❎No fertilizer ❎No light even! (it’s not necessary, however, I do add a small grow light to my finishing trays to brighten up those greens. Personal preference😁) Ready to get started and save money?! Comment “get started” and I’ll send you step-by-step instructions and a full supplies list 💫 The copyright of this post doesn’t belong to @homesteadlife.real, nor do we intend to monetize this content. Fodder directions⬇️👇⬇️👇 There are a few ways to grow fodder that I’ve found to work. Pick what works for you! You can use lots of different seeds. Here are my favorites…barley, buckwheat, sorghum, oats, clover, sunflower, amaranth, alfalfa, hemp, millet, quinoa, wheat grass, ryegrass, field peas, radish. Try to pick seeds that germinate at the same rate if you are mixing. Always start by soaking the seeds you are using overnight in water. I use a mason jar. Then drain and rinse in the morning. In the trays I’m using, I soak about 3/4 C of seeds. No sunlight is needed. Method 1: Place the seeds evenly in a shallow tray. Spray them with water every morning. You don’t want them to dry out so you might have to do it in the evening as well. Start a new tray daily if you want. The tray should be ready in about 5-7 days. Don’t worry about it too much, they can eat the seeds at any stage. You don’t want the seeds to get slimy or mold so don’t overwater! Method 2: Use trays with holes in them. I find that these dry out faster so watch them carefully! You can get trays that have holes and stack on top of trays that don’t to catch the water. Method 3: Build a tower to hold your trays. All trays have holes except the bottom one. Water from the top and let gravity water the lower ones. If you can find bins that stack on each other you can just drill holes in the bottoms but you need space and air in between so they can grow. #chickens #fodder #growingfodder #chickenentertainment #chickentreats #chickenfeed #chickenfood

Hydroponic barley fodder might look like a giant green carpet, but it’s actually one of the most efficient livestock feeding systems in modern agriculture. 🌾🐄 Instead of growing feed in massive outdoor fields, farmers sprout barley seeds indoors using only water, controlled humidity, and stacked trays — creating fresh, nutrient-rich fodder in just 7 days. The process is surprisingly simple. Barley seeds are soaked, spread across trays, and misted several times daily until they grow into thick mats of green shoots and intertwined roots. Animals eat the entire thing — sprouts, grain, and root system — meaning almost nothing goes to waste. Just a few pounds of seed can produce several times its weight in fresh feed, making it far more space-efficient than traditional hay farming. Farmers are turning to hydroponic fodder because it uses less water, less land, and works year-round regardless of droughts or harsh weather. The fresh greens are packed with vitamins, protein, and moisture, which can improve livestock health and even boost milk production. What looks like a strange indoor grass factory is actually a glimpse into the future of sustainable farming. Credit: @farmboxfoods #foryou #reels #discovery

Did you know that **spoiled food** is food that has gone bad and is no longer safe to eat? 🍎🥛 When food stays too long or is not stored properly, bacteria can grow and change the smell, taste, and appearance of the food. Learning everyday vocabulary like **“spoiled,” “rotten,” and “expired”** helps you communicate better in real-life situations. For example, you might say: 👉 *“This milk is spoiled.”* 👉 *“The fruit smells rotten.”* Understanding these words is very useful when talking about food safety, shopping, or cooking. Keep learning simple English words and practice using them in daily conversations to improve your confidence! 🌟 #learnenglish #learnenglishonline #englishvocabulary #everyone #englishconversation

Chicken fodder is so easy to make! And it’s a great treat for chickens who need extra snacks and entertainment when they can’t free range as often as usual. We use both wheat and oat seeds, and I want to try barley too. When soaking seeds overnight, cover with 2” water as the seed soaks up the water and expands. You should see sprouts in a couple days and should be ready to give to your chickens after a week or two. Have fun! ❤️ #chickens #chickenfodder #iowa #iowaflowerfarm #farmlife #bochnerfarms #seedstarting #seeds #gardening
