Emotionally distressed people are not weak. They are overwhelmed. Psychologically, emotional distress often shows up when the nervous system stays in a constant state of pressure. Sadness, anxiety, and stress begin to overlap, making even simple tasks feel heavy. What others see as functioning is often someone silently trying to regulate emotions just to get through the day. These feelings can come from unresolved trauma, emotionally unsafe relationships, long term stress, or repeated experiences of not being seen or heard. Over time, the brain shifts into survival mode. Joy feels distant, motivation fades, isolation increases, and self worth slowly erodes. Emotional distress is not always loud. Sometimes it looks like numbness. Sometimes it looks like overthinking. Sometimes it looks like smiling while feeling empty inside. Recognizing these signs matters because healing starts with awareness, not blame. Seeking help is not a failure. It is a nervous system asking for relief, safety, and support. Everyone deserves emotional balance, connection, and the chance to feel whole again. Yep!! Who has ever heard of high- functioning anxiety?? High-functioning anxiety is when you look like you have it all together on the outside—successful, responsible, on top of things—but inside, you’re constantly overthinking, second-guessing yourself, and feeling on edge. It might look like: • Always being busy because slowing down feels uncomfortable • Over-preparing for everything just to avoid messing up • People-pleasing and saying yes even when you want to say no • Replaying conversations in your head and worrying you said the wrong thing • Struggling to relax even when everything is “fine” You might get praised for being so reliable, driven, or put together!! but it doesn’t always feel like a compliment when your motivation is anxiety, fear of failure, or the need to prove yourself. It’s functioning through the anxiety, not without it. And just because it’s hidden well doesn’t mean it’s not exhausting.

Please save the judgemental comments… she really struggles with executive functioning & starts things and gets distracted and leaves a trail of chaos behind her! I’m the same! But when the mood takes me, my autism takes over and I blitz and organize! She’s so happy with being able to find everything now! Let’s see how long it lasts 🤣 #adhd

A lot of eldest daughters with high-functioning anxiety are trying to heal in the same way they learned to survive. Quietly. Independently. Without needing too much from anyone. Not because they want to be alone. But because being “the strong one” became their identity very early. The one who stays calm. The one who fixes things. The one who keeps everything moving when other people fall apart. So when they finally realise they’re anxious, burnt out, or overwhelmed… they approach healing the same way. They research everything. They listen to podcasts. They journal about their patterns. They try every tool they can find. They become very good at understanding themselves. But their nervous system is still on duty. Still anticipating problems. Still feeling responsible. Still bracing for what might go wrong. Because for many eldest daughters, anxiety wasn’t random. It was a strategy. A way to stay useful. A way to stay safe. A way to make sure everything didn’t fall apart. And the work now isn’t just “learning more.” It’s slowly teaching your nervous system that you don’t have to hold everything together anymore. That it’s safe to rest. Safe to not be the one managing everyone and everything. And that kind of safety isn’t built through pressure or perfection. It’s built slowly. Through small moments where you stop performing strength and start allowing support. If this feels familiar, there’s nothing wrong with you. You’re just unlearning a role you had to step into far too early. 💚 💌 If you’re an eldest daughter and this hit home, comment ELDEST and I’ll send you my free resource that helps you calm your brain. 💚Comment "BLUEPRINT" for access to the deeper system where safety meets both biology and environment. Hills I Will Die On as a High Masking AuDHD Mum to a High Masking ADHD Daughter 🧠 Just because she’s quiet doesn’t mean she’s coping. Stillness doesn’t mean a still nervous system. 🧠 High masking is not the same as high functioning. It just means she’s learned how to hide her struggle so that you don’t notice 🧠 If she stims, she stays regulated. That small repetitive movement with her feet? That’s her nervous system self soothing. I will never shame that out of her. 🧠 Exhaustion after social events is not attitude. It’s the crash after a acting “normal.” 🧠 She is allowed to take up space without being loud about it. ADHD in girls often whispers. That doesn’t make it smaller. 🧠 I will not praise her for how well she masks. I will praise her for knowing when to unmask. 🧠 She does not owe the world eye contact, small talk or constant cheerfulness. 🧠 I am raising her to understand her brain, not fight it. I can’t quiet the world for her - but I can build her a space where her nervous system is safe. Save this for the days you forget and send it to someone who needs a softer place to land too ✨

Here they are ⬇️ 1. Sitting in your car for a few extra minutes before going inside because it’s the only place no one needs anything from you. 2. Replaying conversations in your head, checking if you said the wrong thing or upset someone without meaning to. 3. Staying up late scrolling even though you’re exhausted, because it’s the first time all day your brain isn’t responsible for everyone else. 4. Feeling instantly irritated by small noises, mess, or interruptions… and then judging yourself for being so easily overwhelmed. 5. Avoiding texts, even from people you love, because replying feels like one more thing your brain can’t hold. 6. Fantasising about cancelling everything, going off grid, and being somewhere no one can reach you for a few days. 7. Wanting a hug, reassurance, someone to take over for a minute… but not knowing how to ask without feeling like a burden. 8. Doing everything for everyone all day… then eating standing in the kitchen or forgetting your own needs completely. 9. Crying in private, wiping your face, and going back to being “the strong one.” 10. Forgetting little things, struggling to focus, or walking into a room and blanking… because your brain is carrying too much all the time. This is what survival mode can look like in eldest daughters with high-functioning anxiety. You’re the reliable one. The thoughtful one. The one who notices everything, remembers everything, carries everything. From the outside… it looks like you’ve got it all together. But inside, your nervous system is constantly on. Always scanning. Always anticipating. Always trying to keep the peace. You didn’t become this way for no reason. At some point, being “the easy one” felt safer than having needs. And now your body doesn’t quite know how to switch off. If this felt a little too familiar… Nothing is wrong with you. You’re not dramatic. You’re not “too much.” You’re just used to carrying too much on your own. And the work isn’t doing more. It’s learning how to feel safe without holding everything together. That’s exactly what we start doing inside my High-Functioning Anxiety Relief Blueprint. Comment BLUEPRINT and I’ll send you the link 💚

Sometimes the nervous system holds onto stress and emotions quietly in the background while you keep functioning and moving through daily life. Then, without much warning, it can decide it is safe enough to let go. When that happens, the release may come out suddenly as tears, shaking, deep breaths, or a wave of emotion. It is not weakness. It is the body completing a stress response and clearing out what it has been carrying. 💌Diana #mentalhealth #therapy #explorepage✨ #reels #traumahealing Video Credit: @thetinychefshow

We spend so much time looking for "symptoms" that we often miss the signs that our body is functioning perfectly. As a vascular surgeon, I look for specific markers that tell me your "internal piping" is in pristine condition. Some of them might surprise you. The "Vascular Victory" Checklist. How many do you have? 1️⃣ Hairy Toes: 🦶 Yes, really. Hair growth requires rich oxygenated blood. If your toes are hairy, your arterial flow is excellent. (Smooth, shiny toes are actually a sign of PAD!). 2️⃣ Visible Veins During Workouts: 💪 This is called "vasodilation." It means your vessels are flexible and expanding correctly to cool you down. 3️⃣ Pink Nail Beds: 💅 Squeeze your toenail. It should turn white, then snap back to pink in under 2 seconds. This is the "Capillary Refill" test. Fast is good. 4️⃣ You Pee Clear/Pale Yellow: 💧 Your blood viscosity is low, reducing the risk of clots. 5️⃣ No "Sock Rings": 🧦 When you take your socks off, your skin is smooth with no deep indentations. This means your venous return is fighting gravity successfully (no edema). 6️⃣ Warm Hands & Feet: 🔥 Your circulation is reaching the furthest extremities effectively. 7️⃣ Cuts Heal Quickly: 🩹 You scraped your leg, and it scabbed over fast. This means your blood is delivering nutrients and platelets efficiently. 8️⃣ You Don't Get Dizzy Standing Up: 😵‍💫 Your baroreceptors are working perfectly to adjust blood pressure against gravity (no orthostatic hypotension). 9️⃣ Resting Heart Rate < 75: ❤️ Your heart is efficient and doesn't have to overwork to pump blood. 🔟 You Can Walk Without Pain: 🚶‍♀️ You can walk a mile without your calves cramping (claudication). This is the #1 sign of healthy arteries. What is your score out of 10? I want to see who has the "Perfect 10" (and who has the hairy toes!). Let me know below! 👇 Want to keep your score high? Follow @rema.malikmd for daily vascular tips. Ready for a check-up? BTS of high-functioning depression. not the crying on the floor version, and not the “i can’t get out of bed at all” version, but the version where you answer every email, make the money and show up to things. But u also haven’t washed your hair in nine days and there are 13 water bottles on your nightstand and it’s 2pm and you haven’t eaten. i have a private equity background with a real estate degree. i left high school early, and i worked 60-hour weeks at 16. And yet… this is what my room always ends up looking like, despite my success in every other aspect of my life. nobody talks about the pain of being able to do everything for work, and absolutely nothing for yourself. if this is you — you’re not lazy. you’re not broken. you’re tired in a way that sleep doesn’t fix. and you’re still showing up. that counts more than the room looks. You got this 🤍 #mentalhealth #depression #burnout #ugccreator #roomcleaning
