GARRY POINT PARK, FISHERMAN’S MEMORIAL (Fisherman’s Needle) & SCOTCH POND (Steveston) Richmond, BC Canada 🇨🇦 Garry Point Park is a wide, open stretch of shoreline where the river, wind, and working boats all meet. Garry Point Park sits at the southwest edge of Steveston, where the Fraser River opens toward the Strait. It’s a mix of open fields, shoreline, and views of the South Arm’s busy traffic — fishing boats, tugs, and the constant movement of the tide. The park is also home to the Fisherman’s Memorial and serves as a regular spot for walkers, kite flyers, and anyone watching the weather roll in from the Gulf. A tall, free‑standing monument at Garry Point Park in Steveston, the Fisherman’s Memorial honours local commercial fishermen who lost their lives while working out of the Steveston harbour. It was officially unveiled on May 4, 1996, after a community‑led project that began in 1990. Scotch Pond is a protected moorage on the west side of Garry Point Park, originally built to serve the Scottish Canadian cannery fleet. The pond was designed to shelter small fishing vessels from the winds and currents at the mouth of the Fraser River, with wooden pilings and narrow channels guiding boats in and out. Today it remains an active moorage area, used by local gillnetters and small commercial boats. The surrounding shoreline, boardwalks, and marsh edges make it a regular spot for walkers, bird activity, and views across the South Arm. The site reflects Steveston’s long connection to the fishing industry — a working landscape that still carries traces of its cannery past.
