GRWe were questioned last week on the honesty of our 100% grass fed beef claim.
I was questioned by a certifier. Knute was questioned by a potential customer. In both cases, the conversation started with an accusation that we were not being truthful, and we had to defend our claim and prove its accuracy.
Here is what we told them:
To have the words '100% grass fed' printed on our label we are legally required to submit signed documentation to the USDA FSIS through our meat processor and have it reviewed and approved. That included a flow chart outlining the full life cycle of our steers (+ control methods to guarantee steer does not eat any grain), the calving and identification records, drafts of labels, and how the processing plant ensures there is no cross contamination. Our processor can supply those records to an inspector at any time and we are subject to random inspection of the farm to confirm such practices.
If a meat label has a USDA inspection stamp on it and any sort of claim (100% grass fed, no antibiotic, no growth hormones, family raised, etc.) you can be rest assured that in order for that label to be printed and placed on the item - it had to be approved through the USDA FSIS.
Now, if someone truly wanted to get away with stating false claims could they? Yes - we live in a broken world and our food system isn't an exception to that. Just like any industry there is an element of trust involved.
So what’s the solution? I don’t have one, but I do have some recommendations.
