Save this for when you’re feeling stressed or anxious✨ Havening is a physical touch practice that helps you create a sense of safety in your mind and body. It reprograms pathways in the brain that are associated with emotional distress, and can help replace it with self soothing and inner peace. Try these three Havening techniques: 1. Cross your arms like a hug and gently stroke your arms from your shoulders to your elbows 2. Glide your palms back and forth against each other softly 3. Brush your fingertips across your cheeks and under your eyes Do this for 60-90 seconds in moments of stress and feel the activation melting away. This is called havening. A soft stroking of your arms. It quickly generates calm and releases the feel good hormones of oxytocin, serotonin and dopamine. It also decreases stress hormones, lowers blood pressure, and regulates the nervous system to manage stress and anxiety. I like ending this quick practice in a self containment hug. Putting your right hand under your left arm pit (next to your heart) and your left hand on your right shoulder. Your body thinks this hug is literally coming from someone else. It brings your body immediately out of the fight or flight state and into the rest and digest. Isn’t amazing that such a simple and short practice can make such a HUGE shift in your entire system?! Give it a try the next time you desire to feel calm, present and at ease. My 3 favourite, quick ways to regulate my nervous system, and feel grounded (not in order of preference!): 1. Orienting - take time to scan your environment, looking around you, below you, above you… s l o w l y… You are telling your body (which includes your brain!), that you are safe, and there there is no imminent threat or danger. In the reel, it shows me doing it super fast! This is NOT how you should do it! :-) 2. Havening Technique - cross your arms and place your hands on the top of your shoulders. Move your hands down your arms towards your elbows, and repeat for as long as necessary. The hands move downwards only (not upwards). On Healthline, it is said that Havening can boost production of serotonin. I believe it also helps due to the bi-lateral stimulation. For me, simply, it helps me to relax! You can also stroke your face, and your hands, as if washing your hands slowly (without soap!)…The latter is a good one for when you’re in public. 3. Physiological sigh breathing - one deep breath, followed by another more sharp inhale, and then a L O N G exhale. The long exhale activates the parasympathetic nervous system. Ie. You should feel more ease (heart rate goes down). What are your favourite ways to feel a little more Zen 🧘 🧘🏼‍♀️?!
