Breastfeeding is often treated as common knowledge. It isn’t.
Behind every feeding concern, there may be physiology, pathology, or risk that requires structured assessment — not reassurance alone.
An IBCLC is trained to assess feeding through a clinical lens: infant growth patterns, hydration markers, milk transfer dynamics, maternal health variables, and early warning signs that warrant referral.
Certification through the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners is not a social media badge. It represents standardized education, supervised clinical hours, examination, ethical accountability, and defined scope of practice.
In settings where lactation practice is loosely regulated, credential clarity becomes even more important.
Feeding difficulties are not minor inconveniences. When missed, they can contribute to hypernatremic dehydration, significant jaundice, hospital readmission, and maternal psychological distress.
Breastfeeding support, when done properly, is healthcare.
