Scientists in Antarctica have just inaugurated the first global repository of mountain ice cores. As the climate crisis melts glaciers all around the world, this frozen vault aims to preserve the history of the Earth's atmosphere for future generations to study. Scientists studying Antarctica have reported that the continent has lost an amount of ice roughly ten times the area of Los Angeles over the past 30 years, highlighting the accelerating effects of climate change on polar ice sheets. Satellite observations and long-term measurements show that warming ocean temperatures and atmospheric changes are contributing to the melting of glaciers and ice shelves surrounding the continent. Important Details: • Ice loss observed across large sections of Antarctica • Scientists analyzed satellite and climate data over 30 years • Melting driven by warming ocean waters and atmosphere • Ice loss contributes to rising global sea levels • Changes affect global climate and ocean circulation • Polar regions warming faster than many other parts of the planet The findings emphasize the importance of monitoring polar ice sheets, which play a critical role in regulating global sea levels and climate systems. #ClimateScience #Antarctica #GlobalWarming #EnvironmentalResearch #EarthScience Sustainability

For my final day at the Allan Hills in Antarctica with the @coldex_stc team, I want to share one of my favorite videos that I filmed while out here. After our team finished drilling one of our ice cores, reaching a bottom depth of 91 meters/298.56 feet and collecting multi-million year old ice samples, I strapped my camera to the drilling rig and we sent it down the borehole. Watching the footage later, we were all in awe of the beauty of this ancient ice we had spent weeks drilling. Hard work, patience, and ingenuity combined to make this possible, and I’m so proud to have been part of this incredible science team here in Antarctica. Now, the ice cores are making their way back home where NSF COLDEX scientists will take them and analyze them to deepen our understanding of Earth’s rich history. Here’s to cool science and the people who make it happen! For anyone wondering, this was filmed with an @insta360 camera! I built a rig to strap a light to illuminate the borehole as well, and can make a video about the setup sometime soon! #antarctica #sciencevideo #science #Insta360Awards #Insta360LeicaAwards

On one of my last days in the field with @coldex_stc, I stumbled upon a small magnifying glass in a pile of field kit and instantly knew what to do with it: take a closer look at some of the amazing air bubbles we’d traveled thousands of miles to collect! While this isn’t a scientific microscope or anything, I still think it’s so cool to see these bubbles, which has been trapped in the ice for millions of years, up close. They’re all unique, of different shapes and sizes, stretched and compressed by glacier movement over the course of eons. And the secrets they hold help our scientists better understand Earth’s dynamic atmospheric system which helps us better understand our present and future too. How cool is that?! Anyway, enjoy these bubbles, bubbles few have and will ever see—from some of the oldest ice on Earth! #coolscience #antarctica #sciencevideo #airbubbles #closeup

ANTARCTICA RECORDS RARE ANNUAL ICE GAIN Satellite observations indicate that Antarctica experienced a rare annual gain of over 100 billion tons of ice in one recent measurement period. Monitoring organizations like NASA track ice mass changes using satellite gravimetry and radar altimetry. Important Details: • Over 100 billion tons of ice gained • Detected via satellite observations • Year-to-year variability common • Long-term Antarctic trends still complex • Influenced by snowfall patterns • Regional changes vary widely • Climate models still evolving Short-term increases can occur due to heavier snowfall or temporary climate patterns. Scientists emphasize that such gains must be evaluated alongside long-term trends to fully understand polar climate dynamics. Antarctica’s ice sheet is one of Earth’s most complex climate indicators. #Unboxfactory #Antarctica #ClimateScience #PolarResearch #EarthSystems

A HIDDEN ANCIENT LANDSCAPE FOUND UNDER ANTARCTICA Scientists have discovered a vast ancient landscape buried beneath Antarctica’s ice sheets—frozen and preserved for about 34 million years. Using satellite radar and ice-penetrating imaging technologies, researchers mapped valleys, rivers, and mountain formations hidden beneath kilometers of ice. Important Details • Landscape preserved beneath Antarctic ice • Estimated age about 34 million years • Revealed using radar and satellite mapping • Includes ancient river valleys and mountains • Provides clues about Earth’s past climate • Helps predict future ice sheet behavior • Important for glaciology research Before Antarctica froze into its current icy state, the continent once hosted rivers, forests, and a much warmer climate. Studying these buried landscapes helps scientists understand how Earth’s climate changed over millions of years—and how ice sheets may respond to future warming. Antarctica still holds some of the planet’s greatest geological secrets. #Unboxfactory #Antarctica #EarthScience #ClimateHistory #Innove2030
