Interoception is our body’s way of recognizing internal sensations and emotions. It allows us to identify when we are hungry, sleepy, anxious, and more so that we can respond appropriately. At times, identifying these internal sensations can be challenging. Incorporating interoception-based activities would benefit children (and adults) to increase awareness in this area. As shown in this reel, body experiments focus on specific body parts by using movements/sensations to generate a response. We start furthest away from the body and work our way closer to our center and internal organs. Children are encouraged to express how their body feels after each experiment with descriptive words (ex: wiggly, relaxed). The more we experiment in different areas, the larger our collection of sensations grow. Interoception is the key to emotional and stress regulation. This is your ability to notice and understand your internal sensations. It involves being aware of sensations like hunger, thirst, heart rate, breathing, and other bodily processes. Interoception is the foundation of healthy self-regulation. Interoceptive skills are required to notice when you are becoming angry, anxious, collapsed, or shut-down, and then to manage your emotions proactively. You can learn more about interoception, the nervous system, and neuroplasticity in the Vagus Nerve Program starting on 25 September 2023. Enrolments are now open at the link in my bio and stories. https://www.nervoussystemschool.com/vagusnerveprogram #vagusnerve #mind #mindbody #yogainspiration #trauma #traumahealing #selfcare #yogaasmedicine #yogateacher #counsellor

Interoception is the ability to notice and connect bodily sensations with emotions. You forget to eat. You are ignoring signs of thirst. You forget to pee or poop. Interoception is an important factor in developing effective self-regulation skills in children, teens, and adults. Many who experience challenges with self-regulation have underlying interoception challenges. This can lead to significant difficulties with emotional regulation and managing challenging behavior. How can you be taught to regulate or control something you are not aware of or do not understand? The good news is that interoceptive and emotional awareness within children, teens, and adults can be improved over time with the proper instruction and support. And where do you find that support?!? With ME!! I teach you all about recognizing and becoming aware of your interoceptive cues in THRIVE Like a Parent! Comment THRIVE below, and I will DM you to see if this program is right for you! Interoception is often the missing piece for regulation because it’s the system that helps children notice, understand, and respond to what’s happening inside their bodies. Without it, we’re asking kids to regulate emotions and behavior without the information they need to do so. Interoception is the sense that allows you to notice what’s happening inside your body by interpreting signals from your organs like your heart, lungs, tummy, bladder, etc to understand feelings of hunger, needing to use the bathroom, pain, or emotional states like anxiety or anger. Regulation strategies only help when a child can recognize that they’re becoming dysregulated in the first place. If a child can’t feel or interpret early body signals (like a racing heart, tight muscles), then they’re likely not going to engage in your calming strategies. When interoception is supported, children begin to notice body cues earlier, make sense of what those sensations mean, and are able to connect them to actions that make them feel better. This allows them to intervene sooner by asking for what they need. Over time, this is what builds true self-regulation :) If you’re looking for more ways to supports your sensory and big-feelings kiddo, make sure to follow me for more! I also have a section dedicated to interoception in my sensory guide so comment KIT if you want to check it out :)

You’re not ‘too sensitive’ — you’re highly tuned. 💡 Your system reads detail others miss — humming lights, itchy tags, strong scents. That’s not weakness; that’s precision. Trust the signal. Adjust the space. Respect your tuning. What’s one environment tweak that helps you most?

We don't have 5 senses, we have more. While most of us grow up learning about sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch, scientists recognize many more. Depending on how you define a "sense," humans actually have at least 14–20. Equilibrioception – sense of balance (regulated by the inner ear). 2. Proprioception – sense of body position (knowing where your limbs are without looking). 3. Thermoception – sense of temperature (hot and cold). 4. Nociception – sense of pain. 5. Interoception – sense of internal states (like hunger, thirst, heartbeat, etc.). 6. Chronoception – sense of the passage of time (still debated but supported by brain studies). 7. Magnetoreception – potential sense of Earth’s magnetic field (found in some animals; weak in humans). 8. Pressure perception – part of touch, but distinct from fine tactile sense. So yes, it's more accurate to say we have a multisensory system with at least 15 or more senses, depending on definitions. Video credits @integrated_wellbeing_

➡️ Yes, data shows that neurodivergent kids are absent from school more than their neurotypical peers 📊 But it's not just because of school avoidance/trauma, it is also physical health issues 🏫 Neurodivergent pupils are often not believed to be ill, to have unexplained physical injuries or sudden flares 😖 🏥 When a neurodivergent child complains of being in pain, having tummy aches, headaches, feeling tired and dizzy - these symptoms are often written off as being physical signs of anxiety or other mental health issues, or simply disbelieved. Whereas research indicates that these symptoms can be caused by common comorbities such as joint hypermobility syndrome, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and auto immune conditions 🧑‍⚕️ Health practitioners, researchers, educational psychologists, clinical psychologists and educators are largely unknowing and neurodivergent children often go undiagnosed for many contributing reasons ⚠️ This is diagnostic overshadowing and misattributing our neurodivergent young people's issues and it's something that we, as parents, really need to be aware of 👀 As a teenager with, what turned out to be an autoimmune condition that took a long time to diagnose I feel this! ➡️ Have you had to fight to advocate for your autistic/ ADHD child in the medical system or at school to have their physical symptoms taken seriously? 💬 #comorbidities #interoception #ehlersdanlossyndrome #jointhypermobilitysyndrome #autismsupport

Been an interesting day around here. Woke up to a text from Ashlynn saying she threw up in her bed. 🤢 We have tried to teach her to head to the sink, or bucket or anything but she always vomits wherever she is presently. This morning she went downstairs and did it again walking around. My son told her “Ash when you get that feeling, start to head to the bathroom or the sink.” Her response? “What feeling Jace?” Followed by, “Is that what you do?” #diaslogansyndrome #adhd #interoception
