Kauri are among the world's mightiest trees, growing to over 50 m tall, with trunk girths up to 16 m, and living for over 2,000 years. Kauri forests once covered 1.2 million ha from the Far North of Northland to Te Kauri, near Kawhia and were common when the first people arrived around 1,000 years ago. Maori used kauri timber for boat building, carving and building houses. The gum was used as a fire starter and for chewing (after it had been soaked in water and mixed with the milk of the puha plant). The arrival of European settlers in the 1700s to 1800s saw the decimation of these magnificent forests. Sailors quickly realised the trunks of young kauri were ideal for ships' masts and spars, and the settlers who followed felled the mature trees to yielded huge quantities of sawn timber of unsurpassed quality for building. The Waipoua forests of Northland were at first saved from destruction by their remoteness. The land was purchased by the Crown in 1876, but for decades there was debate over what should be done with the forest. Public pressure for total protection increased after the turn of the century, although in the 1940s kauri was logged for wartime boat building supplies. In 1952 the 9,105 hectare Waipoua Sanctuary was finally declared, with all remaining kauri forests in Crown lands coming under the protection of the Department of Conservation by 1987. Kauri trees on private land are now also largely protected. Info credit: https://www.doc.govt.nz/nature/native-plants/kauri/ #getoutside #kauri #forest #adventure #newzealand

One of the most fascinating experiences on New Zealand’s North Island ⤵️ ✨ Walking among towering kauri trees and uncovering their incredible history! Must-visit locations: 📍 Kauri Forests in the northern part of the North Island – search for ‘Kauri Walks’ or ‘Te Matua Ngahere’ on Google 📍 The Kauri Museum in Matakohe Fascinating facts about kauri trees: 🌳 The largest kauri tree had a staggering diameter of over 8.5 meters—it’s almost beyond imagination! 🌳 These trees can live for more than 2,000 years, making them true natural giants. 🌳 Known for their exceptional timber quality, kauri trees were heavily exploited for shipbuilding and furniture. Even their gum was in high demand. 🌳 This exploitation drastically reduced their spread. Thankfully, the remaining forests are now protected. 📌 Save this reel to witness the magic of these ancient giants when you visit New Zealand! #newzealand #newzealandguide #kauri #forest #forestlovers #nature #naturelovers #naturelover #beautifuldestinations #beautifulplaces #placestovisit #beautifulplace #gianttrees

I have so much to say about these trees… This is Tane Matua Ngahere and Tane Mahuta - the second largest and largest Kauri trees in New Zealand respectively. Tane Mahuta - the 5th biggest tree in the world. I honestly didn’t expect anything visiting these trees - like, they’re just trees right? No… the sheer scale and magnificence of seeing these living things that have been around for thousands of years smacked me in the face. We met the loveliest ambassador on these tracks who told us all about these Kauri trees, and I hope I never forget what I learned that day. These trees are between 2000 to 3000 years old. Tane Mahuta (the second and third clip), has over 100 species of trees living on top of it, including a 200 year old and a 150 year old tree. That’s a whole ecosystem, all supported by this one father tree. The twisting lines you see on the trunk of Tane Mahuta, they’re because as the tree grows, it twists around to allow sunlight to reach all the little plants growing around its trunk and roots (what?!?! Plants take care of each other 😭) - because if his neighbours are healthy and strong, he’ll be too. It was here that I heard a Māori story, probably my favourite one in all my travels in NZ. According to the Māori, Tane Mahuta is known as God of the Forest. In the past, the sky father and earth mother used to rest on top of each other, shrouding all life in darkness. Tane Mahuta, tired of the darkness, decided to lie on his back and use his feet to push the sky father and earth mother apart, creating the world of light we live in today 😭 These Kauri trees grow so slowly and go through so much to get so big and strong. Yet, humans have brought in a disease called Kauri dieback disease, which is spread from our shoes stepping on the soil around their roots. We were told that infection to death of a 1000-year-old tree only takes 3 months. 3 months, to kill a tree so full to bursting of life. That’s why there are shoe washing stations and boardwalks along these tracks - please, if you ever go on these tracks, make sure to use these to protect the kauri trees!

Kauri trees once had their bark cut and stripped from them to be tapped to collect Kauri gum. . While in Northland we were taken to visit some of these trees that were still clinging on to life. . It is strange to me that someone would think to be so extractive with their relationship to trees… . But I guess our outlooks change through the generations. . Visiting New Zealand’s biggest kauri trees is a must-do! Tāne Mahuta (‘Lord of the Forest’) and Te Matua Ngahere (‘Father of the Forest’) are both found in the Waipoua Forest, Northland. The walks to them are short and accessible, with boardwalks protecting these ancient giants. The track to Tane Mahuta has recently reopened with new measures to prevent kauri dieback—so don’t forget to clean your shoes before and after your visit! 🥾🚿 Who else has seen these legends in person? . . . . #NewZealand #NorthlandNZ #WaipouaForest #KauriTrees #TaneMahuta #TeMatuaNgahere #AncientTrees #NatureLovers #NZMustDo #ForestMagic #Conservation #KauriDieback #ProtectOurForests #NZBucketList #ScenicWalks #KiwiPics #RealRawNZ

Sorry the sound is all messed up… I was originally narrating the video but now it’s silent. Oh well, basically it says this: Today the botanical name of this tree is #Polyscias_racemosa but I’ll forever call it the botanical name I learned #Munroidendron_racemosum. Here’s some of the fruit that’s prime for harvest. This extremely rare tree is only found naturally on the island of Kaua’i in very low numbers, typically in #mesicforest habitats. What makes this tree so rare are a number of factors including but not limited to: Habitat loss, predation from feral ungulates like goats and deer, fruit predation by rats and pigs and other smaller pests like stem borers. However, as vulnerable as this tree is in the wild, they’re one of the easiest trees to grow and require little watering once established. They’re easily one of the most unique, almost prehistoric looking trees and are so beautiful when in bloom and also while fruiting (also edible fruit) as you can see in the latter pics. Related to the non-native, highly invasive #Schefflera_actinophylla, a.k.a. the #octopusTree, these trees should be planted all over Kaua’i in as many landscapes as possible along with all the other Kaua’i specific endemics such as all the native #Hibiscus that come from there and all the different #loulu palms! 👀 #newzealand #adventure #vanlife #trekking #travel
