TUThe Kithul tree (Caryota urens) is native to Sri Lanka and parts of South India, often found in dense rainforests and hill country.
For centuries, villagers and forest dwellers (like the Vedda tribes of Sri Lanka) would climb these tall trees to tap the inflorescence (flower stalk) and collect the sweet sap — a practice requiring skill, timing, and patience.
This sap was:
➡️Boiled slowly over firewood
➡️Poured into wooden or coconut shell molds
➡️Then cooled to form jaggery blocks (known as hakuru in Sinhala)
This technique is entirely manual, smoke-infused, and sacred — no machines, no chemicals. The process is deeply intertwined with nature, tradition, and seasonal cycles.
✨ In Ayurveda, Kithul is believed to balance heat in the body, aid digestion, and nourish ojas (vital life energy).
✨Kings and monks were said to consume Kithul-based sweets for mental clarity and vitality during fasting or rituals.
✨It was also part of temple offerings and festive sweets in villages — a sign of abundance and nourishment.
✨In Ayurveda, it’s considered madhura (sweet) in taste and ushna (warming) in effect, helping balance Vata and Pitta. It builds ojas (vital energy), supports digestion, and acts as a gentle detox for the blood and liver.

They have 3" to 5" waxy aromatic smelling, pink and dark-red flowers growing directly on the bark of the trunk. The tree bears, directly on the trunk and main branches, large globose woody fruits; they look like big rusty cannonballs hanging in clusters, like balls on a string
The sivalingam shape is visible at the center of the flower and snake shaped pollen is the specialty of this flower and it has very good fragrance. This rare flower can be used for Shiva Pooja.
The tree gets its common name from the large, spherical fruits it produces. The fruit falls from the tree and cracks open when it hits the ground when mature, often causing the sound of a small explosion. The fruit emits an unpleasant aroma when exposed to the air. Individual seeds within the “ball” are coated with hair, which is thought to protect the seed when it is ingested and may also help in the passage of the seed through the intestines.
