Wait for it… 👻 I was SO surprised when I looked at the leaf of this house plant (called Tradescantia zebrina) under the scope. The underside of the leaves are purple so I couldn’t resist! Can you see how well each cells are separated? And the stomata look just like eyes! Or mouths? Or vulva? Or all of the above?? 😂 I want to dig into these stomata because they are such important structures of plants. They’re basically small pores enabling plants to absorb CO2 for photosynthesis and to lose water by transpiration. Photosynthesis is the process by which plants absorb light energy to split water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen and convert carbon dioxide into sugars! These sugars will be used for the development of roots, vascular tissue, fruits and other parts of the plant! Transpiration is the evaporation of water that has been absorbed by the roots and transported all the way to the leaves. When this water evaporates through the stomata, it creates a tension that drags the other water molecules from bottom up. Stomata are protected by a pair of guard cells that can adjust their turgor (tension) as a way to open or close the pores. Depending on the needs of the plant and internal or environmental cues, stomata can adjust their aperture! Lots of different pathogens have learn to use these microscopic pores as a way to enter the plant so closing these stomata is a good way to ward them off. Not only guard cells respond to CO2, water vapor and pathogens but they can also adjust the pore opening in response to hormones, light and ozone levels. Stomata from the epidermis of leaves have been around for around 400 million years! It has been a way for plants to adapt to the terrestrial environment. Stomata can also be found on the epidermis of stems, fruits and other organs of the plant. This is how we observe stomata, a very simple preparation! Stomata are pores present on the epidermidis of leaves, that are used for gases exchange. Nail polish is applied to the bottom side of the leaf and allowed to dry completely. Then a piece of clear tape is placed over the nail polish. Finally the sellotape is carefully peeled off and mounted on a slide for microscopic investigation. #microscopy #microscope #biology #biologylab #lovebiology #cells #science #stem #scientist #Sciencetechnicians

You won’t be-LEAF how cool leaves are under the microscope 😍🍃 “The most amazing thing is that when I looked at the leaf at very high magnification, I could see the chloroplasts moving inside the cells! (chloroplasts are the organelles of the cell that perform photosynthesis). . The chloroplasts do not move by themselves. They get moved by cytoplasmic streaming, which is a mechanism that cells have to move things around in the cytoplasm using the cytoskeleton. . Circling the chloroplasts around the cell by cytoplasmic streaming makes photosynthesis work more efficiently because the chloroplasts get more exposure to sunlight. Since photosynthesis requires light energy, more sunlight energy means more photosynthesis. What a beautiful way to maximize the efficiency of photosynthesis!” 📸: @dr.bio4ever 🔬: Olympus CX30 . . . #EvidentLifeScience #Evident #Olympus #Microscopy #Microscope #Micro #Microscopic #Microscopicworld #LifeScience #Biology #Microscopes #Nature #Science #Scientists #MicroscopeImages #Research #Optics #Imaging #Objective #Sciart #Microworld

🔬✨ Discover the Hidden World of Stomata! 🌿 Ever wondered how plants breathe? 🌬️ Dive into the microscopic world of stomata — the tiny openings on leaves that let plants exchange gases and “breathe” just like us! 🍃 👩‍🔬 How to View Stomata Under the Microscope: 1️⃣ Take a fresh leaf (like from a Tradescantia or lily). 2️⃣ Peel the underside using tweezers to get a thin layer. 3️⃣ Place it on a microscope slide, add a drop of water 💧, and cover with a cover slip. 4️⃣ Observe under low and then high power — spot the small pores surrounded by guard cells! 🌱 Science Fact: Stomata open and close to control water loss and carbon dioxide intake — essential for photosynthesis and plant survival. 🌞 ✨ Perfect for: Gas exchange lessons Photosynthesis experiments Hands-on discovery in middle school labs 🧪 Simple setup, everyday materials, endless curiosity! #PlantBiology #MicroscopyFun #Stomata #ScienceLab #STEMEducation #BiologyExperiment #Photosynthesis #MicroscopeMagic #ScienceForKids #MiddleSchoolScience #STEMLearning #ScienceIsFun #PlantScience #BiologyLab #ScienceTeacher

Plant breathing under a microscope #tree #nature Plants may look still, but under a microscope they are constantly “breathing.” In this close-up view you can actually see the tiny pores on a leaf called Stomata opening and closing in real time. These microscopic gates control the exchange of gases during Photosynthesis — allowing carbon dioxide in while releasing oxygen and water vapor. What looks like a simple leaf is actually a dynamic system working every second to keep the plant alive. I missed my opportunity to post this bleeding algae on Halloween (it’s unfortunately not actually bleeding)! I found some interesting dark globs of Cyanobacteria growing on the air tube in my stock tank. These globs were shiny and nearly black…until you crushed them. Then they released a deep red pigment. There wasn’t much living inside those mats, but the life on and around them kept me busy: Lacrymaria, Stentor, Dileptus, a few flagellates I didn’t bother trying to identify because I know my limits, some Euglenoids, and a rotifer from the family Notommatidae. It’s one of those samples that reminds me why I love microscopy. 🔬 Olympus BX51 w/ DIC from @mundaymicroscope 🎥 iPhone 14
