They told us it was a leatherback turtle. But leatherbacks don’t move like this. Heavy steps. Armored back. That concrete room feels less like an enclosure and more like containment. The lighting, the silence, the way it watches… this doesn’t feel natural. Something about this feels engineered. #CreatureVibes #Mutated #SciFiEnergy #HorrorAesthetic #StrangeFootage #Unnatural

Take 3 is devastated to see yet another endangered leatherback turtle wash up on our local shores.  We reached out to Robert Olive from Australian Seabird and Turtle Rescue with our concerns. Please read Rob's statement below: The recent localised events involving the deaths & entanglements of leatherbacks turtles is unprecedented with 5 animals being recorded deceased on Central Coast beaches in a matter of weeks. Even though the current cause of these deaths is still unknown with information yet to be released by the relevant authorities. It is of particular concern that these events are localised from Toowoon Bay to Avoca Beach coastline, a section of coastline that has seen the rollout of additional shark mitigation measures. Our coastlines and waterways have been affected by recent flooding events with an increase of debris and pollution affecting our waterways especially from the Hawkesbury River catchment. At this stage we can only speculate the causes of these deaths until the relevant information is released, this event has been localised to the leatherback turtle species. We urge that information is released in order to try and prevent further deaths involving this species. The leatherback turtle is the largest of all marine turtles, growing up to 3 metres in length. Under the EPBC Act the leatherback turtle is listed as an endangered species, with most sightings in temperate waters from Southern Qld to Central Coast NSW with the main food source being jellyfish. The leatherback turtles face many threats and these include: ❌Risk of extinction because numbers are low.
❌Entanglement in shark nets, traps, longlines and other fishing gear.
❌Predation at nest site by feral pigs and foxes.
❌Collision with boats and other marine traffic. ❌Marine debris, particularly plastic, which is mistaken for jellyfish and can cause asphyxiation, abrasion, infection and blockages in the turtle's system when swallowed.

Take 3 urge that information is released in order to try and prevent further deaths involving this endangered species. We will update our online community once we have more information.

Our favorite girls are back on the beach and looking good! 🔥 We might be a little biased… but here’s why leatherbacks are always a 10 out of 10 in our book👇 FACE • Unlike green turtles that have serrated beaks for tearing through seagrasses or loggerheads that have thick, strong beaks for crushing up crustaceans, leatherbacks have two fang-like cusps on their upper jaw that help them grab and hold onto their favorite snack - jellyfish! 🪼 • Leatherbacks have a unique “pink spot” on the top of their heads, also known as the pineal spot or pineal skylight. Researchers believe this spot helps the turtles sense light and detect seasonal changes to help guide them during their long migrations across the ocean. 🌞 BODY • Unlike other sea turtles, leatherbacks lack scales and a hard shell; instead, their backs are covered by a thick, leathery skin with ridges that help streamline their movement through the water and enable them to dive to incredible depths. Their scientific name, Dermochelys coriacea literally translates to “leathery-skin turtle”. 🐢 • Not exactly petite… the leatherback sea turtle is the largest of all sea turtles, averaging lengths of up to six feet and weighing over 1,500 pounds! 🏋️‍♂️ PRETTY FEET (flippers) • As the most migratory and deepest diving sea turtle in the world, leatherbacks use their enormous front flippers for those long distance swims (and to perfectly camouflage their nests!). 🏊‍♀️ • Their large rear flippers are used as rudders for steering and stability while swimming and to dig their egg chambers while nesting. 🪏 With eleven nests on our survey beach already, we’re thrilled to see these gorgeous girls back in Florida and off to a great start for the 2026 nesting season! 🎉

A leatherback hatchling a day keeps the doctor away! Did you know that leatherbacks make up about 1% of all of our nests here in Broward County? That usually looks like about 40-60 nests a season! Leatherback sea turtles are true ocean giants and ancient survivors! They’ve been around for more than 150 million years, sharing the planet with dinosaurs. Highly migratory, leatherbacks travel thousands of miles between feeding and nesting grounds. They’re also the most widespread sea turtle species, found in every ocean except the Arctic and Antarctic. Sadly, their numbers have declined in many regions. But thanks to conservation efforts, leatherbacks continue to thrive in places like Trinidad, where more than 20,000 nests are laid each year! 🎥 Ashleigh Bandimere #Leatherback #SeaTurtleConservation

Witnessing these lil’ leatherback turtle hatchlings make their way to the big wide ocean was a magical experience! Simon & Judy from NET (Nature Enhancement Team) in collaboration with @dominicaseaturtles welcomed us & gave us info about leatherbacks before excavating two overdue nests to help the remaining babies to emerge. The hatchlings’ fumblings & tumblings down the beach is part of their strength building for their big ocean journey ahead. For the males they’ll never come ashore again, for the females they could return in 40 years to lay their own eggs on this same beach! Only 1 in a 1000 leatherback hatchlings reach adulthood. So watching 16 babies of this endangered species enter the waves was a moving experience, and all of us there were cheering them on! • #dominica #natureisland #seaturtles #leatherbackseaturtle

Meet Shirleen, a 900-pound leatherback turtle and an epic traveler. Thanks to satellite tracking by the Loggerhead Marinelife Center, we now know more about where she goes. Leatherbacks are endangered – threatened by vessel strikes, loss of nesting beach habitat, changing ocean conditions and getting inadvertently caught in fishing gear. They need our help but, meanwhile, #GoShirleen! To learn more about Shirleen's journey and the Loggerhead Marinelife Center, go to the link in our bio and select this post 🐢🐢 [Video description: Upbeat music without spoken audio plays as we watch the movements of Shirleen, a leatherback turtle represented by a yellow dot, on a map over the span of 907 days.] #Turtles @OceaLife #OceanConservation #EndangeredSpecies
