Have you ever bought a new sewing pattern hoping this one, would be the perfect one?
Maybe it had the neckline you were after, or a sleeve variation you thought you liked.
So you of course, you bought it.
But, sadly, after many hours of your precious labour later, you realise it is just not quite right.
It yet again falls short of that vision you had in your head for this garment.
It’s a frustrating cycle, and I’ve seen so many sewists stuck in it.
I used to be there too!
But here’s how I learned the way out of this cycle of just 'collecting patterns you don't really like'.
You don’t need heaps of patterns.
You need a few patterns that fit you well, and the skills to confidently customise them.
A new neckline. A different seam finish. A cute trim. Pockets!
Those changes are surprisingly much easier than you think.
This is how I build my own me-made wardrobe.
It isn't by starting over from scratch on every project.
I do it by evolving what already works.
It’s about doing the work 'pre-sewing' and planning your projects and sewing with intention, so that you end up with clothes you love and actually want to wear!

LELook. I LOVE designing repeat patterns as much as the next surface pattern designer. I’ve released 20 fabric collections with @modafabrics over the last 8 years.
However, when I think about myself, my identity is NOT only “fabric designer” or “surface pattern designer”.
I’m an artist and profitable business owner who knows how to make marketable, sellable art, and create art in different formats using different programs so that I can leverage my art across multiple industries and revenue streams.
Only creating repeat patterns would have limited me too much.

THPatchworks are always one of our top selling prints and there is one trick that will guarentee a sale: Avoid too many sharp cut lines between patches. The more one pattern blends into the next, avoiding ‘blocks’ of pattern, the friendlier it is to your customers production of their product. No matching patches at side seams, and the fabric can be cut in any direction, therefore less wastage.

Digital patternmaking in Adobe Illustrator, on the other hand?
It’s the best of both worlds... the closest thing to pen-and-paper pattern drafting that I’ve found 📝
Illustrator gives you the snappy efficiency of working digitally,
(Copy/paste to duplicate instantly, no time-consuming tracing)
But without the overwhelming learning curve of a software like CLO.
And if you want to sell digital sewing patterns? You’re going to need Illustrator anyways ⬅️
I have students come to me with experience using industry patternmaking softwares who STILL want to learn Illustrator bc without it, they’re reliant on factories and graphic designers to bring their patterns to the world.
Adobe Illustrator is the only software where you can draft, grade, AND package your patterns for sale as PDFs.
I’m resolute that Adobe Illustrator is the best blank slate for building your patternmaking skills.
And at the same time I’m OBSESSED with supporting my students to find the most efficient and fun workflows for them
CLO3D will no doubt be the next step for many graduates of my Confident Patternmaking & Grading program, and my job is to support them no matter what tools they use.
