Marathon training gets real when your long runs hit half marathon distance every weekend. Once you’re running 21km plus regularly, this isn’t just going for a run anymore. This is the part of a marathon training block where endurance is built, fatigue stacks up, and recovery actually matters. If you’re training for your first marathon or chasing a time goal, this is where things shift. #marathontraining #marathonrunner #runnersofinstagram #running #longrun

Your forward lean is slowing you down. The deeper insight from the 2024 study “The effect of forward postural lean on running economy” isn’t just that leaning forward costs energy — it’s that the cost grows as speed increases. At higher speeds: ⚡ Every degree of extra lean amplifies metabolic demand 🔥 Posterior chain load increases disproportionately 📊 Small posture changes create larger efficiency losses In the study, runners using greater forward lean showed significantly higher oxygen consumption at the same pace. That gap widens as intensity rises. This explains why aggressive early-race posture often leads to late-race fade. You’re not just working harder — you’re compounding inefficiency with speed. Advanced takeaway: 🏁 The faster you run, the less margin for wasted motion ⚖️ Optimal posture is subtle, not exaggerated 🧠 Your body self-selects efficient form when not forced Apply this in training: 📏 Use video to check for excessive forward bend at tempo pace ⏱️ Compare effort at same pace with and without “intentional lean” 🧘 Cue “tall and relaxed” during threshold runs 🔁 Let cadence rise naturally instead of reaching forward The goal isn’t to lean forward. It’s to stop leaking energy. TAKE YOUR RUNNING TO THE NEXT LEVEL ⤵️ Explore 🔗 in bio for free running resources #runningperformance #runningeconomy #marathonrunner #runstrong #enduranceathlete

Here’s a look at my personal experience of the cup-free water stations at the Paris Marathon. Running at a pace of around 4:20/km I found it a real struggle to get more than a small mouthful of water during each stop. For many who were there to enjoy the run, it doesn’t sound as though it was too much of an issue - perhaps even a welcome break to stop, refill & refuel (there was bananas, etc. there too). But I did find it frustrating (you may be able to tell from the audio 😳). Whilst I personally wasn’t chasing a strict race goal, I was hoping to match my PR - so I really didn’t want to slow down too much and lose any momentum (something that, especially in the latter stages of a long race, can be really difficult to regain once you’ve slowed down). I ended up with very little to drink, soaking wet shoes / socks / feet, and during one of the later stations crashed into someone who I didn’t realise had stopped in front of me to fill his cup as I was too busy looking at where I was holding out my own cup. We very nearly ended up on the floor. Side note: I did pre-empt that this was going to be an issue (after seeing @thismessyhappy posting about it recently), so along with the speed cup in my hand I carried two 350ml bottles of water in pockets on the back of my shorts - the trouble with that was that I had to tie the shorts so tight to prevent too much bounce that I’ve now got a sore friction burn from the shorts string along the bottom of my stomach, and across my lower back from the bottles. Also, this was my own speed cup that I brought with me and carried in my hand throughout the race - what were other people doing that perhaps hadn’t brought a cup with them, does anybody know? Anyway - I totally appreciate that this is better for the environment than cups / bottles, but do you think it’s the most suitable solution (including from a health & safety perspective for those truly racing)? I’m not sure what other alternatives there could be, so I’m genuinely interested to hear others’ thoughts - drop a comment below and get involved in the discussion 👇

A lot of advice on the internet is tailored to “average” runners. And what I’ve found as a slower than average runner, is that the same rules don’t always apply to us in the same way. Here are some of the things I’ve stopped doing, as a slower runner: 🏃‍♀️ Stopped sharing my paces on every run- I found that when I shared my paces regularly, I felt pressure to run “acceptable” paces, or paces that looked good to people online. So for several years I stopped doing that. It helped me to figure out how to actually run “easy” pace, and how to feel okay with my slower pace. Now I share my paces more regularly and don’t feel ashamed of it. 🏃‍♀️ Stopped taking fueling advice from other people- this might be controversial, but I don’t think slower runners should listen to anyone who says “you don’t need to fuel for runs under X number of miles.” Respectfully, that doesn’t make sense. 6 miles might take 45 minutes for a fast runner, but it might take an hour and a half for a slower runner. The fueling needs are different. Trial and error has been far better for me than any advice from a stranger. 🏃‍♀️ Stopped waiting to go for my goals- I thought I should wait to sign up for a marathon until I could run the whole thing without walking. I thought I should wait to go to a run club until I could keep up with the middle of the pack. I thought I should wait to show up on social media until I could post “respectable” times. That’s all bull shit. There is no pace requirement to be a runner. No pace based prerequisite to sign up for a marathon, join a run club, or post your runs on social media. Even races with time cutoffs will sometimes allow runners to finish on the sidewalk. You don’t need to wait until you’re “fast enough” to do anything. If you’re being called to do something, freaking go for it! I could list a ton more, but IG will cut my caption off. These are just a few big examples that have helped transform my running experience as a slower runner. What would you add to this list?? #marathonrunner #womensrunningcommunity #marathontraining #inspiringwomenrunners #runtheworld #runnergirl #femalerunner #midsizerunner #backofthepackrunner
