Every year, tens of thousands of mobula rays migrate here to the coastal waters of Baja California Sur, where they congregate here in massive numbers between the months of April to July. When in large enough groups, they can become quite easy to approach and we get to enjoy incredible underwater views of these animals up close. But with only one pup per cycle and a Vulnerable status, every encounter reminds us how fragile and important they are. Every year, in the spring, these rays are drawn to the gulf of California. They congregate in massive numbers, mating and reproducing while also feeding on the huge quantity of plankton in the water here this time of year. Sometimes, if you’re lucky, it’s possible to swim with incredibly large groups of these rays. A group of rays like this is called a “fever”. When swimming with a large fever of rays, in calm water, on a sunny day… it really almost feels like you’re flying with a huge flock of underwater birds. And that’s exactly what it looks like from the drone as well.
